In an attempt to hopefully get the new and next generation of kids to see this film, I want to let you know - that in honor of the new Jackie Chan movie opening today - I watched this film, the original Karate Kid, last night!
It is amazing how energetic, pationaite, exciting and uplifting this film still is! I saw it originally in the theatres at least three times! And of course - I have seen it a couple of dozens times again since - and it really still holds up. I still well up with happy tears an excitment at the end - even though I know its coming everytime!
Yes the cars, music and even the costumes are all a little dated (it is the 80's) - but the story, the drama and the characters are real and compassionate. Not to say anything bad about Mr. Jackie Chan's version of the Martial Arts Master in the new film - but the late Mr. Pat Morita performance is one outstanding talent that makes you wish he was really your teacher, your father and especially you best friend.
His comic timing and element of command by doing so very little - but saying so very much with a short comment, gesture or even a look - sends chills down my spine! The movie would be nothing - without him and his amazing performnce regarding his characters loss of his wife and child. (Which earned him an Acadamy Award nomination for Best Actor.)
Ralph Macchio's and Elizabeth Shue's performance were 'spot on' as the boyfriend-girlfriend from opposite sides of the track. There energy grew until the very end - where you believe they will always work well together despite their obvious economic diferences in their backgrounds.
Everyone knows the story - the bully picks on the kid, the kid finds the right role model/mentor and the kids defends his honor in a way the bully needs and does lose - he loses in order to understand what matters most. "Fighting is ALWAYS the Last Resort...", Mr. Miyagi
Bill Conti's musical score - (as the times in the movies were reflecting back in the 80's) - was just as inspiring and up-lifting as the similar brass heard in his Acadamy Award score for al the Rocky films!
The director is John G. Alvidson. The director of original Academy Award winning Rocky. Do I need to say more - or that he has received several Acadamy Awards as well?
The script is Mark Kamen - again an Acadamy Award winner and continueing legendary script doctor of hollywood.
The bonus features include great behind the scenes segments with all the cast and the director as well as the writer talking about the changes, production and locations of the film. They talked about the martial arts, training, choreography and staging of all the fights.
The commentary features, Pat, Ralph, John G. and Mark...and has some great humorous behind the scenes tid-bits about the filming of the project. Including bloopers, locations switches, problems and scenes that radically changed.
There's even a great little segment on the Bonzi Trees which play a big part in the original movie itself!
The Karate Kid is an amazing movie! It's a simple film with an amazing message and 100% heartfelt power of emotion driving it! Please let your kids watch this one too as well as for yourself - a great family film - and you'll remember that doing the right thing - is always the best thing to do. Add this to your collection! 6-11-10

The Karate Kid (Special Edition) Overview
A fatherless teenager faces his moment of truth in The Karate Kid. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) arrives in Los Angeles from the east coast and faces the difficult task of making new friends. However, he becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks his handyman Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita), whom he learns is a master of the martial arts, to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that karate is a mastery over the self, mind, and body and that fighting is always the last answer to a problem. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops not only physical skills but also the faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale to this entertaining film.
An 80's Classic!!! - Pumpkin Man -
I re-watched this movie to get ready for the remake. I bet every kid in the 80's grew up with this film. Ralph Macchio stars as Daniel LaRusso, who is forced to move to Reseda. He meets Ali Mills, and makes an enemy with her ex-boyfriend, Johnny. When Daniel is violently bullied, the handyman named Mr. Miyagi agrees to teach him how to defend himself in the art of karate. At first, Daniel thinks he's being treated like a slave, because he has to wax the cars, paint his house but he was really learning karate moves the whole time. Mr. Miyagi gets Daniel ready for an 'All Valley Karate Tournament' where he must confront his enemies, and Johnny and see if he has what it takes to be the best and win the gold. I highly recommend THE KARATE KID!!!
