All of the loveable characters are back – Alex the lion, Marty the zebra, Melman the giraffe and Gloria the hippo, King Julien, Maurice and the penguins – in Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa. They find themselves in the wildest place of all – the vast plains of Africa – where our zoo-raised crew encounter species of their own kind for the very first time. While discovering their roots, they quickly find the differences between the concrete jungle and the heart of Africa. Despite long-lost relatives, romantic rivals and scheming hunters, Africa seems like a great place...but is it better than their Central Park home?

Maybe I'm childish, but I find this movie hysterically funny for both a child and adult. I put this movie in for a three year old toddler and found myself enjoying it more than he did.

#1 Cheap Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

It takes this show a while to get moving, but it does pick up nicely about 15 minutes in. The use of three different shows is interesting, but the rapid cuts get old fast and lead to unnecessary confusion.

The best performance is clearly at the Apollo, the site of Rock's greatest success, Bigger And Blacker. So why include the Jo'berg and London shows? Just to show he's an international star now? Too bad, because you can hear from his voice that Rock is most comfortable and free--and funny!--at home in NYC. His outfit in each town says it all.

When it does pick up, you can see Rock relax and start to really deliver the goods. As usual his best material is related to race and personal politics, and there are some classic bits here. The "crease" line is pretty special, among many.

So, while not close to the perfection and edge of B&B, and not quite as solid as Bring The Pain, this is better than Never Scared. But Chris---one show every five years? We need more of your comedy, and especially your gift for telling the truth about society, particularly America's blind greed and narcissism. You've got all the cash you need now; stretch out and really let us have it!

I loved the movie when I watched it years ago. My daughter reminded me of it and we tried at all the video stores to hire it without luck...that's why I bought it.
It is about a marriage on the rocks and is funny in places with the couple learning to fall inlove again. You won't be disappointed with the ending. I can't remember any swearing in it and think it is a basically clean movie.

#1 Cheap Management Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

I can understand why people might not like this. Steve Zahn's character really is something like a stalker and it is kind of hard to imagine someone like him not scaring someone like Jennifer Aniston's character to death. And their entire relationship is absurdly unlikely. Still, both Zahn and Aniston manage to be unexpectedly likable and in a weird way they end up making a nice couple. Whether you like or dislike this will depend on how easily you buy into the entire concept.

Also, we live in a period in which romantic comedies -- which is actually my favorite genre -- are suffering from steep decline. So, while this would not by any stretch of the imagination qualify as a great film, it is, compared to other options at the moment, not at all bad.

Another way in which the film managed to rise above many others of the same time is the photography. Almost every shot is more interesting than you would expect in a film like this. There are a host of interesting shots and camera angles and it really does rise higher than the typical film.

Also, got to love any movie that includes several New Pornographers songs. But if you can cut the film a tiny bit of slack and willingly suspend that disbelief (along with your sense if incredulity) this is a film you could find fun.

Management Feature

  • MANAGEMENT (DVD MOVIE)

Management Overview

Jennifer Aniston (Marley & Me, Office Space) and Steve Zahn (Sunshine Cleaning, Saving Silverman) star in this "rare romantic comedy" (Los Angeles Times) that's bursting with originality, humor and sweetness. It's lust at first sight for laid-back motel night manager Mike (Zahn) when Sue (Aniston), an uptight sales rep, checks in. Convinced that Sue is his dream girl, Mike shakes up his slacker life in an outrageous pursuit across the country. But can he steal her away from her hot-tempered boyfriend (Woody Harrelson, No Country for Old Men)? Both Mike and Sue must go on their own twisted journeys to find out if what they really need is each other.

Jennifer Aniston Answers Our Questions

A: You play the ‘straight & narrow’ character to Steve Zahn’s funny man. What is it like acting in a comedy where you have to play the more serious role?

J: The role of Sue is sort of awkward and it felt very human. I just loved it. When you read romantic comedy after romantic comedy, and then you get to read one where the characters are so unique and oddly flawed and broken, that's beautiful. I signed on to the project immediately.

A: Was it hard to keep a straight face when acting opposite Steve and Woody?

J: What do you think? It was impossible! Steve can just give me a look and I’ll lose it. Pretty much everything he does makes me laugh. I think part of it is because he’s so accessible and open. And Woody and I started cracking up before we even got to the set when we were reading the script to each other on the phone. Laughing while the cameras are rolling on the set is fun, but you're not supposed to do it. That only makes it harder not to laugh, of course!

A: Rumor is that you helped convince Woody to agree to be in the film. Is this true and if so how did you do it?

J: That is one rumor about me that’s 100% true! Woody was the directors first choice to play Sue’s husband in the film but he passed on the project because he didn’t like the character. So (director) Stephen rewrote the script and asked me to get Woody on the phone. I actually made a long-distance call and read parts of the script to Woody until he was convinced. I’m so glad he signed on – we had a blast working together.

A: Both you and Steve starred in “The Object of My Affection” over 10 years ago, with just a few scenes together, and he also guested on “Friends.” Do you have any memories of Steve from back then?

J: Steve and I have known each other since the second season of Friends when he played Phoebe’s husband. So I knew who he was but when we did Object of My Affection, I got to know him better. We just had a ball. Steve and (costar) Paul Rudd became like Frick and Frack during that shoot. They actually had T-shirts made that said ''Double Trouble.'' So I knew he would be lots of fun on the set of Management.

A: What did the worst motel you’ve ever stayed in look like?

J: There have been a few sketchy motels in my life, that’s for sure. But one that stands out was in a tiny little town in the Midwest somewhere. It wasn’t so much the accommodations, but the ice machine was right outside of my room. There must have been a convention of ice lovers in town because every 30 minutes or so, that machine would go off. The soothing sounds of ice hitting a plastic bucket isn’t really conducive to sleep. So now, no matter what the hotel looks like, I make sure my room is not near any sort of refreshment area!

A: “Friends” was taped in front of a live audience, so you had that energy. Is doing comedy on film harder than drama on film, or are you still more comfortable with comedy?

J: I’m not sure how to answer that one. Life can be dramatic and funny all in the same day just like the material for a film. So I have to work from right inside. When I step into a role, I don’t think “Oh, I’m going to exclusively use my comedy persona for this job.” That label kind of goes out the door and I concentrate on being true to the character. I think Steve and I were both able to achieve that for this film.

A: We like to ask actors what they consider their most essential film, whether it’s the one they’re most proud of or the most meaningful personally. What would you say is a Jennifer Aniston essential film?

J: You know, I’m not reluctant to name one film but I honestly have to say that each project I’ve done is meaningful in its own way. If I’m an actress, a producer or even a voice, I would hope that I’ve brought something fresh to the project and been true to writers vision. That being said, I think Management is just fabulous [laughs]. But I really do.

A: How was it working with first-time director Stephen Belber?

J: Stephen was very honest about what he was on this shoot – a first-time director. It was refreshing, as opposed to having somebody come in and try to over compensate. He asked Steve and I to rehearse together a week before shooting so it felt more like the theater projects Stephen usually works with. We were able to go through the scenes chronologically, which film actors don’t usually have the luxury of doing. I am a huge fan of Stephen’s. He has amazing instincts.

A: It’s been mentioned that the entire cast/crew stayed in the same no-frills hotel while filming. What was that like?

J: We stayed in a hotel in Madras Oregon – in central Oregon. I dare you to find that on a map! It was newly built but definitely no frills. Like, there was a microwave, but you couldn’t fit anything into it! Everything in the room seemed to be miniature! But because the cast and crew all stayed together, we had a fantastic time. We ate at the local restaurants and we went to a nearby bowling alley. The people of Madras were extraordinarily open and sweet which made for a really unique experience.

A: What is currently in your DVD player or what are you watching right now?

J: I have to say that I am a huge fan of “Mad Men” and have watched it religiously since the first season. So I never miss an opportunity to see an episode. I just love that whole 1960 New York City era.

Steven Zahn Answers Our Questions

A: Have you ever done anything really loony for love?

S: Yeah, if you think a chicken costume is loony. I think I was in college and I hitchhiked down to Rochester, Minnesota -- my girlfriend's town -- in a chicken suit for no apparent reason. But it worked. That's kind of similar to my character Mike. [laughs] I figured if I was hitchhiking, no one would pick me up. But maybe they wouldn’t think a person in a chicken suit was going to kill them so I’d get lucky and catch a ride. I didn't have a car, but I just had to get there because I loved her. She was thrilled to see me but it was more about the journey than it was showing up. It served two purposes.

A: Have you been in a situation where you thought you had a ‘special moment’ with someone to find out in fact that they didn’t feel the same?

S: I have had that situation when I auditioned for a part. I thought the director and I had a special moment but then I wasn’t hired. Actually, that’s happened a lot. It’s almost as bad as being rejected by a girl, for me. But I’m pretty sure everyone, even the most beautiful or hot or whatever people have had that “I don’t feel the same” experience. I know I have but I’m not going to go into detail. I wouldn’t want to ruin my image as a leading man who always gets the ladies, ya know?

A: You and Jennifer Aniston starred in “The Object of My Affection” over 10 years ago, with just a few scenes together, and you also guested on “Friends.” Do you have any memories of Jennifer from back then?

S: Yeah, I played Phoebe’s husband in exactly one episode. It was terrifying – I had never done any TV and there was a group of actors who were best friends for real. I had to pretend I was a part of that world. So we knew each other enough to say “Hi”. Then we did “The Object of My Affection.” We didn’t have a lot of scenes together, but we hung out in the trailer and stuff. She remembered me from those three days when we did that movie. She’s that kind of person. If you had a conversation with her, three years from now she’d remember. It wasn't until this movie — this was what we were meant to do together. Jen and I had, it sounds stupid, but a true connection. We both knew it was going to work. We just felt it. I found her to be wonderful on so many levels. She's prepared and so giving and flexible and funny. We really worked well together and I think it comes through in the film.

A: What did the worst motel you’ve ever stayed in look like? The worst motel?

S: I’d have to think about that because I’ve stayed in some flea bag places. But the worst thing for me is when you don’t have a motel to stay at. I’ve done that before – had to sleep under the stars and stuff and not with any kind of camping gear. So even the grossest motel is better than that. We were lucky for this shoot because we all stayed together in the motel where the film was shot – it wasn’t luxurious or anything but spending so much time together as cast and crew made the experience special.

A: We like to ask actors what they consider their most essential film, whether it’s the one they’re most proud of or the most meaningful personally. What would you say is a Steve Zahn essential film?

S: I’m not sure if there’s any “essential” Steve Zahn film! [laughs] But one of the films that pops up that fans like to talk about is Suburbia that I did in ‘96. It’s a cool movie directed by Richard Linkletter. And I did the whole project experience because Eric Bogosian wrote it so I workshopped it with him then did the play in New York then did the film. And someone just told me that you can’t get it on DVD. So I’ll have to look into that because it’s one of my favorites.

A: How was it working with first-time director Stephen Belber?

S: Stephen was great – he was also the writer and Mike [the character] was just so well written it was one of the ridiculous moments where I said something like, "You'd be a fool not to hire me," which never works, except in this case, it did. [laughs] We even had a full week of rehearsals with us just sitting around a table reading the lines. It’s crazy that there’s no rehearsals in movies usually. But this one, we had a week where we sat all day: Jennifer, me and Steve [director Stephen Belber]. We primarily just sat and everybody else in the cast came in to rehearse. And man, did that work. By the time we finished rehearsal, I think all of us were very excited. Steve was just an amazing director—especially considering that it was his first time directing. He’s a pro.

A: It’s been mentioned that the entire cast/crew stayed in the same no-frills hotel while filming. What was that like?

S: Like I said, this shoot was different because of the actual physical closeness of staying and working in the same place. We’d work all day then we go to a local restaurant and have dinner and a beer or whatever. We even went bowling one time. It was a pretty unique situation. Of course, it might not have worked with a different group of folks so I’m not sure I would recommend it for every project. Yeah, thinking back it would not have worked with a lot of my films.

A: What is currently in your DVD player or what are you watching right now?

S: Oh man – what am I watching? You know I live on a farm in Lexington Kentucky, right? I have to say, I don’t have much time right now to kick back. I’m spending a lot of hours on a tractor. And when the goats and horses don’t need my attention, I have a 9-year-old son and a 7 year-old-daughter to spend time with. I wish I could tell you but I’m coming up blank. Of course, I highly recommend putting in the “Management” DVD. [laughs]

Solid acting, slow story line. - Renee -
I usually adore Jennifer Aniston movies, so I thought I would like this one. I did NOT. The movie felt so depressing. I've seen plenty of movies with depressing subjects and still liked the movie. She played a dramatic and somewhat depressing role in 'The Good Girl', which I loved. However, there was something about the way Management was shot that just made me want to look at the wall, my cat cleaning himself across the room, my son's Power Ranger toy strategically placed right at the top of the basements stairs. I felt so A.D.D. trying to force myself to watch this movie. 2 stars because the acting was not bad, but the story line and flow were aweful.

#1 Cheap School of Rock (Full Screen Edition) Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

While School of Rock is billed as a comedy, I found it more related to Shakespearian comedies than say recent movie comedy. That is to say that no one died and overall it had a good ending. I was surprised to find very few laugh-out-loud moments in this movie. Maybe I'm just a tough audience, but that was my take. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it.

As a matter of fact, I quite enjoyed it. This is something of a feel good story, and it is fun, which is something I always enjoy in movies. While the story leaves a certain number of blatant holes, such as how easy it would be to be invited to a prestigious prep school as a substitute, it is enjoyable enough that I can forgive the unlikely plausibility.

Central to School of Rock is the music. By this I mean that the themes revolve around music not that music is what it is all about. Rock is what molds the protagonist, Dewey Finn, and puts him into the situation that starts the basic plot. Rock is what pulls him out of the funk that he finds himself in, and what gets him into a bit more trouble.

The kids are what make the movie though, and I enjoyed the fact that they play so well. The kids do offer the opportunity for Dewey to change (a little) and to offer his own wisdom to help them through the rather convoluted (or weak) issues they experience, such as being cool, stage fright, and pressure from both peers and parents.

My favorite part was the concert at the end of the movie. In the concert, one gets to see the fun of rock and roll, both during the performance and at the conclusion of the performance.

I think I would have enjoyed a little bit more on the history of rock, other than just a diagram, but that is something that is a minor concern.

I would recommend this movie as a light repast. It isn't very serious, and it isn't over-the-top comedic, but it is fun, for at least an hour and forty minutes or so. I give it 3 ½ stars, which I rounded up.

As far as extras, they were okay, but they were neither a deal maker, or deal breaker.

I enjoyed the Kids' commentary, though it completely overtakes the movie so that you really don't hear the movie during the overplay.

The Lessons Learned section was moderately okay, and you had a better chance at meeting the young actors. There was a little tongue and cheek by Jack Black, which I had mixed (slightly toward positve) feelings about.

I would still reccomend the movie, just on fun.

JACK BLACK STARS AS A DIEHARD ROCK GUITARIST-TURNED-SUBSTITUTE TEACHER WHO TRANSFORMS A CLASS OF FIFTH GRADERS INTO A HIGH-VOLTAGE ROCK GROUP. HIS LESSON: TO LEAD THEIDS ON TO VICTORY IN THE LOCAL BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION.

Very Funny!!! - Pumpkin Man -
I received this as a Christmas present. I've been meaning to write this review for quite some time, but I never got around to it, because I watch this movie on tv whenever it comes on. This movie is extremely hilarious, and has an awesome storyline. Jack Black stars as a rocker named Dewey Finn. When Dewey is kicked out of his band, he tries to find a job so his roommate won't kick him out. When his roommate, Ned Schneebly is called to be a substitute teacher, Dewey impersonates Ned in order to make some money. When he hears his fifth-grade class in the music class, he comes up with an idea to start a new rock band. During class, Dewey has them singing, and rocking out to try and win Battle of the Bands. I highly recommend SCHOOL OF ROCK!!!

We have looked for a copy of this movie in retail stores and even preowned copies at video rental establishments. We have found it twice paired with Michael on the same dvd. We own a copy of Michael, so we did not want to pay extra money for the two. We were happy to see there were a couple copies available on Amazon at a reasonable price. It was not much of a gamble for us because we have seen the movie. We were however concerned for the condition of the movie. The case was a little damaged inside and out when we received it, but the disc was in good condition. We enjoyed the movie again and have added it to our collection. Overall, this was a good buying experience from Amazon.

#1 Cheap Mary Poppins (45th Anniversary Special Edition) Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Even if you know this film by heart, this DVD is worth it for the extras. How many classic films from decades past have both stars doing the commentary? Not to mention Karen Dotrice (who played Jane Banks), who adds another charming touch, and a moving tribute to Matthew Garber, her sibling in the film, who died of complications of Hepatitis acquired while traveling in India.

But there's more: a documentary entitled "Disney on Broadway" provides a fascinating behind the scenes look at the craftsmen who adapted P.L. Travers work to a new venue: the stage. While obviously a bit of a puff piece, and there's a whiff of self-congratulation here and there, frankly, much of the pride here is well deserved. Travers' well known scorn for certain aspects of Disney's film is well known. How Disney Exec Thomas Schumacher and producer Cameron Macintosh finessed the great dame into giving them the rights makes for interesting viewing.

A last point-- so often when we are offered a glimpse behind the scenes, we find out that a magical film wasn't always so magical for those involved in the creation of it. Not see here. For everyone involved in this production (and everyone seems charming) it seems to remain a high point in their lives. Disney magic indeed. Don't miss it!

#1 Cheap The Money Pit Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

If you are familiar with any Sid reviews then you know about our love of b films. You make think The Money Pit was a huge film and in no way is b, which the point is valid. However almost every 80's comedy at this point can be found in the same category as b which leaves them all open to a nice Sid review. They all have really corny humor which walks the line of being b anyway, so why not treat them as such. It's a funny rainy afternoon flick and shows Tom Hanks in the light of still being likeable. Long before his days of boring drawn out big budget trash, the guy actually has something to offer.

Hanks plays a guy named Walter who decides to purchase a house with his girlfriend after they get booted from their apartment. They find a huge place for a cheap price only to have it fall apart piece by piece. It's really one of those essential 80's comedies filled with brainless laughs. This is something Sid loves. We plan on doing a lot of 80's comedies in the near future and can tell you this is one we would have enjoyed back in the day. Almost as much a Peter Griffin does.

Even though this movie has been out for a while, my family just got around to watching it last night. I love Christmas movies and was looking forward to seeing something new. We really enjoyed it, but you have to go into realizing it's silly funny and relies on slapstick humor. Nothing earth-shattering but still an enjoyable way to spend the evening. It's fairly predictable with two neighbors fighting for dominance to see who will be the "Christmas King" and both losing sight of the true spirit of Christmas. Everything gets so out of control that they manage to make total fools out of themselves but it's pretty humorous to watch. :-)

I particularly enjoyed the casting of the two wives (Kristin Davis and Kristin Chenoweth). They were both great in their respective roles and played well off of each other --

Fun and entertaining !

Deck the Halls Overview

Matthew Broderick and Danny DeVito are hilarious as two neighbors trying to put the "win" in "winter" in one of the year's funniest comedies! Determined to unseat Steve Finch's (Broderick) reign as the town's holiday season king, Buddy Hall (DeVito) plasters his house with so many decorative lights that it'll be visible from space! When their wives (Kristin Davis and Kristin Chenoweth) bond, and their kids follow suit, the two men only escalate their rivalry and their decorating. It's anybody's guess whether the holidays will wind up jolly or jostled in this wild and woolly laugh-fest that the whole family will love!

COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER - fmwaalex - Austin, TX USA
DECK THE HALLS

I didn't get to many chances to watch some Christmas movies that much last month because of certain things but this one I did catch. I have heard people say they loved this movie and others say they hated it, I fall somewhere in the middle I suppose. At first glance this seems like it has the potential to be a holiday classic. Sadly after watching this it falls flat and never reaches the level of entertainment the actors can deliver. Still this is not a horrible movie or at least to me. It may be the things going on with me lately that makes me feel like a need an escape ever once in a while but I thought the film was ok.

Steve Finch [Broderick] is a man set in his ways who believes in traditions and is about to begin his duties of planning the town Christmas. That is until a man named Buddy Hall [Danny DeVito] moves in across the street, then things don't seem to go his way. Buddy is a guy that is bored with life and just wants to find his purpose in life. It turns out that purpose may be to annoy his neighbor in trying to be seen from space. So as Buddy try's to light his house up with Christmas lights the neighbors go to war. Subtle at first but as the war rages on it gets nastier, even costing them their families.

I found this film to be a little tame at times because before watching it I really thought they went all out on each other. Tame may not be the right word but I thought they went at it harder. Things get childish at times which may be another downfall in this film but to be honest sometimes it is entertaining. I kinda expected a little more of a war between the two especially since the three writers on this film have done some entertaining films in the past. That may be indeed be the problem, the script and not the actors.

To be honest as far as acting goes this film is pretty good since they are only performing what is on the page. DeVito is pretty entertaining to me in this one since he is very believable in the role. Same can be said for Broderick who seems like the type that could be up tight like his character. Everyone in the film do good jobs from the wives to the towns' people. Director John Whitesell who has done some good stuff especially in the TV world could be at fault as well for not helping the film reach its full potential.

To be fair the film is not horrible and can be an entertaining at times, in fact it is a good natured movie. The cast does bring something to it that it needed and like I said I enjoyed especially for what is going on right now. I do recommend this movie with the brain off and as a rental. I know people who don't like this film but I do know others who do, if I had to choose I would say I am one of those who do.

The film is a testament to friendship, authenticity, untethered life force, the beautiful craziness of SoCal and the sheer genius of directing with a light touch and a clear eye. As "Caddyshack" is a must own for golfers, "Slapshot" is a must own for anyone who ever laced them up. Paul Newman is more than believeable as just about washed up Reggie Dunlap and brings a centering influence to a movie that could have gone up in a cheap laugh or two. Mixed with the antics of the Hanson brothers (the foil, the race car set in the hotel room) this movie is alive with lines that you hear in NHL locker rooms 25 years later (everyone from Sidney Crosby to the assistant locker room guy knows "You go to the box and you feel shame"). Every hockey player you know needs a copy of this movie.

#1 Cheap He's Just Not That Into You [Blu-ray] Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Dating is, perhaps, the oldest game there is. We all play it at some point, devoting countless hours and resources to it, only to fail a majority of the time. We enlist the help of others--friends, books, websites, seminars, etc.--but even with such help we still end up utterly lost. There doesn't seem to be a fixed set of rules, and when we think we've found a set, countless exceptions pop up and throw said "rules" out the window. Aiding and abetting our frustrated attempts are well-meaning friends who encourage us through assurances of our likeability, our attractiveness, the other person's stupidity, etc. So why do we continue to play this game? We play in hopes of finding that ever-elusive thing called love.

It is into this eternal fracas that the filmmakers of He's Just Not That Into You cast their audience. This is the story of nine intertwining lives, each person's tale adding another layer to the complexity of relationships that we all encounter day to day. This film boasts an all-star cast and, for the most part, does not disappoint. It is charming, funny, dramatic, shocking, and incredibly honest. A rare find in a "romantic comedy" genre so often riddled with puerile vapidity.

Though a story of nine lives, the central story guiding the film is that of Gigi (Ginnifer Goodwin), a hopeless romantic who spends much of her time pining by a phone hoping her latest date will call. As tends to happen in such circumstances, Gigi is patronized and coddled by her girlfriends who attempt to assuage her fears of being rejected and alone. Then Gigi meets Alex (Justin Long), a straight-shooting bar manager who opens Gigi's eyes to the difference between what men tell her and what they really mean. This includes the shocking reality that sometimes guys just aren't into the girls they go on dates with. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this as everyone can't be "the One," it's just a fact that needs to be accepted and dealt with.

The rest of the film deals primarily with stereotypes: the obsessive compulsive wife, the pompous jackass who finds it hard to believe that marriage means he can only sleep with one person for the rest of his life, the sultry libertine who lures him away, the guy who "doesn't believe in marriage," the woman who's been with him for nearly a decade hoping he'll change his mind, and of course those who are looking for love in all the wrong places/faces/online profiles. But even though these characters are stereotypes, they are believable and done very well. All of us know people exactly like the ones portrayed on screen and so we are able to connect with, and probably even empathize, with what is transpiring before our eyes.

All in all, this film is quite enjoyable and I appreciate the honest way in which relationships are portrayed by the filmmakers. It's refreshing to see a "chick flick" which actually has some basis in reality and does not fit the typical "girl meets guy, they fall in love, fight and break up, get back together, and live happily ever after" formula that typifies the genre. Inevitably, some will not like what they see on screen and will claim it's too harsh on certain types of people. My only response to that would be: the truth sometimes hurts.

Video/Audio
The Blu-ray disc is presented in full 1080p in a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. The picture is excellent and really brings out the vibrant colors used throughout the film. The audio is Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and is very crisp. This is mostly a talking movie, so it's hard to really evaluate the sound, but I had absolutely no complaints about the quality.

Special Features
There are a number of special features included on the Blu-ray disc. These include deleted scenes with commentary by the director, a featurette on translating the book into the film, and an interesting look into how film directors stage such seemingly extemporaneous scenes as phone calls. The most interesting special feature for me personally are six mini-interviews with the characters of the film showing how their lives have changed since the conclusion of the film. Very interesting way to continue the story and brings a further sense of realness to the lives of the characters.

He's Just Not That Into You [Blu-ray] Overview

Newline He's Just Not That Into You (Blu-ray) Based on the bestseller by two Sex and the City scribes, He's Just Not That Into You confirms that the HBO series was more than just a television show--it was a cultural institution that spawned tours, catchphrases, fashion trends, and more. Ironically, the resulting film is both smarter and funnier than thebig-screen version of Carrie and the gang. Of thenine central characters, the sweet, if clueless Gigi (Big Love's Ginnifer Goodwin) makes the most vivid impression. The Maryland career girl tends tofall for friendly guys, like Conor (Entourage's Kevin Connolly), who are "just not that into" her. At a local watering hole, she meets bar manager Alex (Justin Long, Goodwin's Ed co-star), who sets her straight about the difference between what men say and what they mean, adding that there are exceptions to every rule. Her seemingly settled co-workers, Beth (Jennifer Aniston) and Janine (JenniferConnelly), have relationship issues of their own:Beth's boyfriend of seven years, Neil (Ben Affleck), doesn't believe in marriage, and Janine's husband, Ben (Bradley Cooper), has a wandering eye... for singer/yoga instructor Anna (Scarlett Johansson). Alt-weekly ad saleswoman Mary (executive producer Drew Barrymore) provides the link between thisloose-knit community. An avid Internet dater and full-time technophile, she bemoans the fact that "people don't meet each other organically anymore."At 132 minutes, Ken Kwapis's movie could use a few trims, but he brings these complicated romantic entanglements to a convincing conclusion and the confessions from random passers-by add to the laughs.

#1 Cheap Caddyshack Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Like its predecessor, "Caddyshack" is crude, crass & sophomoric---but so fun, and funny, that you don't care. The film's cast is like one generation of comedic talent merged with another. Chevy Chase is at the peak of his sarcastic-irreverent self as Ty Webb, the golf club founder's sometimes flippant, sometimes murky son. Bill Murray plays Carl, the greenskeeper who's seemingly one shy a full deck. But it's Rodney Dangerfield who steals the movie as no-class contractor Al Czervik, who dresses in loud clothes, has a golf bag equipped with a beer tap, T.V., stereo & remote control for his drivers, and generally makes a nuisance of himself with sharp one-liners. And the late Ted Knight is the perfect comic foil/villain for Dangerfield's antics as Judge Smails, a snobbish, combustible member with much wealth & influence. The film's main plot has to do with Michael O'Keefe's down-on-his-luck caddy Danny trying to schmooze a caddy scholarship out of the abusive Smails. However, this is the impetus which draws all these characters into the plot which leads to a "big showdown/high stakes" golf game. But this is only half of the film as first-time director Harold Ramis & writers take pleasure in veering off on goofy subplots: Murray's "Cinderella story" golf game; a priest playing the best game of his life in the middle of a raging storm; Dangerfield disrupting the green with funny stories, rock music, and illegal betting; Chase & Murray's strange encounter when Chase's ball slices into Murray's shed/home; the rowdy "Caddy Day" pool scene; Chase's funny/inept romancing of Smail's niece, Lacey Underall (what a name!); and, of course, Murray's demented battle with the dancing gopher who's destroying the green.
Whether it's a physical comedy bit by Chase or a good one-liner by Dangerfield that you missed the first time around, "Caddyshack" is the type of comedy that you can watch again & still have a great time!

Caddyshack Overview

The greenskeeper is about to start World War III - against a gopher. The judge plays to win but his nubile niece has her mind set on scoring her own way. The playboy shoots perfect golf by pretending he is the ball. And the country club loudmouth just doubled a ,000 bet on a 10-foot putt. Insanity? No. Caddyshack. Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, Ted Knight and Bill Murray tee off for a side-splitting round of fairway foolishness that does for golf what Animal House did for college fraternities and Police Academy did for law enforcement.

Comedy Classic - M. KochKetola - Middletown, CT
Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield and Bill Murray do some of there best comidic work in this wacky film. The main plot is a little weak but that hardly matters when you have Bill Murray as a deranged groundskeeper trying to exterminate a Golpher, Chevy Chase as a strangely Zen golf pro and Rodney Dangerfield as a crass flamboyant nouveau riche real estate tycoon.

#1 Cheap Brazil Reviews

Seems to me that you enter the world of 'Brazil' or you don't, and that's not a critique of the viewer or an elitist snub. But if you do check-in, if you buy the fantasy, some aspect of it might take up residence in a corner of your mind: a word, a mental image, or a quote you love but can't apply to anything. If you're one of the legion who don't connect with it, you're likely to walk away irritated.

Brazil, like a well cut gemstone, has facets that reflect differently in the eye of each viewer. The story isn't oriented toward past, present or future, because it belongs to all three. Brazil is Orwellian, albeit heavily laced with absurdity and inky dark humor. The world depicted has aspects of our own, but with an odd cross-breeding of technologies and fashions that keep it in some parallel universe where all our worst fears and anxieties about society have come true. In it we observe the life of Sam Lowrey (Jonathan Pryce), an awkward everyman who instinctively craves more than his impersonal and bureaucratic world has to offer. He bristles at the often suggested path of personal ambition, because it brings little more than a deeper trip into the cold labyrinth. Instead of maintaining his designated place in the machinery of society, he strikes out in his own timid way, in search of personal meaning and passion. In doing so, he enters into another kind of labyrinth altogether.

Brazil is another venture into the sub-genre of absurdist-fantasy by its master, Terry Gilliam. Catchy as the label of absurdist-fantasy might be, there are many more flavors in the mix. Gilliam seems to enjoy amazing and entertaining us with one hand, while delivering commentary with the other...in this instance, commentary about our species that's anything but light or humorous. Don't be distracted by the occasional visual effect fashioned from craft paper or a trinket found in the trash; the budget was practically nonexistent. Brazil is a grand toast to story telling, interpretation, and the brassy bravado of imagination.

#1 Cheap The 40-Year-Old Virgin (Unrated Widescreen Edition) Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Okay, not quite 40 years, but really, I should have seen this a long time ago.

I agree with those who say that this film works, but it misses the mark in the end. I like it, in fact I really like it, but the film works better in certain areas and fails miserably in others.

The story is simple. Andy is forty and he has yet to ever be embraced by a woman. He is regarded as a nerd and a loser by his fellow employees at an electronics type store until they decide to help pop his cherry. Giving him advise and pushing him on women gives Andy the confidence needed to fall for a single mother named Trish (hot grandma) and pursue a meaningful relationship with her that transcends the physicality of it all. But, as should be expected, when the physical stuff does come up, disaster strikes.

For me, at times, the film can be too crude for its own good. Judd Apatow is known for his colorful use of comedy, but for me this film loses some of its heart along the way because of the crudeness. The scenes that focus on Andy and Trish have such beautiful and sincere chemistry to them that they are offset so drastically by some of the conversations between the other `guys' in the film; so much so that they tarnish the believability (and likeability) of the Andy/Trish relationship. That is really my largest complaint here, for it is the one that really does the most damage. I think that one already knows walking in that this is going to be crude (I mean, look at the title) but I was shocked by the heart, and so the two don't seem to mesh well together here.

I look at what was done with `Knocked Up' (a better film all around) and even `I Love You, Man' (a MUCH better film all around) and see how they offset the crudeness of the film with the tenderness of the message beautifully, to create a synergy that just wasn't here.

The acting is all decent, especially from Keener, who just shines (she should have been Oscar nominated for this over her mediocre work in `Capote'). Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd are hilarious in there supporting roles, and the brilliant Jane Lynch is unforgettable, even if she is just using a regurgitated role from a previous film. Leslie Mann has a nice cameo (I almost peed) and Elizabeth Banks is brave (VERY MUCH SO). Steve Carell carries this film nicely and paved the way for him to expound on his talent (he is so mature in `Dan in Real Life'). He is believably awkward (not as much as Rudd in `I Love You, Man', but enough) and that makes him very likable.

At times the script suffers from lack off imagination (some of the conversations and `revelations' come off stilted by a lack of grip on the subject) but all in all this is a fun and entertaining ride that offers more than you may bargain for.

ANDY STITZER HAS GONE 40 YEARS WITHOUT 'DOING IT'. NOW HIS PALS ARE MAKING IT THEIR MISSION TO HELP HIM SCORE ... FAST! CAN HESURVIVE THEIR HILARIOUSLY BAD ADVICE? The best of the Apatow Factory comedies - K. Swanson - Austin, TX United States
4.2 stars

Virgin was the first, and still the best, of the now-ubiquitous Apatow buddy comedies. Carell is perfect, as is the script he wrote with Apatow. Rogen and so many of the other guys in every subsequent Apatow production are here, but somehow a little more likeable, and a lot funnier.

There are some truly hilarious scenes, and most all of the bit parts are very well-cast and played. Carell ain't afraid to laugh at himself and that's what makes this work; no one could have played this role better, and he's twice as funny here as in The Office (watch the original BBC version, specifically epsiode 4!).

A very effective comedy not afraid to get a little raunchy but never too much, Virgin will probably be the one Apatow feature still considered hilarious in twenty years.

#1 Cheap Fullmetal Alchemist: Season One Box Set Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

"Fullmetal Alchemist" is a spectacular TV show, a good movie, and a wonderful series of graphic novels. If you wanted to try, it'd be a great novel, mini-series, micro-series, film trilogy, comic strip, radio show, live-action show, or anything else. "Fullmetal Alchemist" would succeed in any forum, because it is a spectacular story. And if you've got that, you have everything else in the bag.
The show follows the adventures of Edward and Alphonse Elric. They live, not in this world, but a close parallel called Amestris, where science has diverged from ours--though far more sophisticated in its way, the science of alchemy has superseded all our sciences in importance. It's easy to see why: if you understand the composition of matter, alchemy can produce anything out of anything--as long as you abide by the law of equivalent exchange: to obtain, something of equal value must be lost.
The one exception to this rule is life.
But when their mother dies, the distraught brothers ignore this rule and do everything they can to bring her back, with disastrous consequences. The resurrected monster is nothing like their mother; Alphonse loses his human body; and Edward is literally ripped apart, left with an arm and a leg.
Torn by guilt over his brother's condition, Edward sets off--with his brother, in a strong but inhuman form--to correct the travesty he has committed. He is determined to bring his brother's body back, but the only way to possibly do that is to find the legendary Philosopher's Stone--the only object on earth that can surpass and ignore the law of equivalent exchange.
In order to obtain the Stone, however, the Elric brothers have one option: they must become State Alchemists, working for the military, doing everything they are bid, whether war or destruction or murder, as the military is the only organization with information on the Stone. It's equivalent exchange all over again.
Their quest for the Philosopher's Stone run a close parallel with Edward's career as a State alchemist, with hilarious, uplifting, awe-inspiring, and often tragic consequences.
"Fullmetal Alchemist" contains a powerful story, thought-provoking,artfully-rendered themes, amazing storylines, and the richest characters I have ever encountered in film or television. Character depth actually rivals many good novels.
I have no complaints about this product. It is highly recommended. If, for any reason, the fact that it is an anime throws you off--unlikely, but possible--don't let it. An amazing story is an amazing story, whatever its form. If you love a brilliant story, "Fullmetal Alchemist" is a must.

Perfect Anime, box set could have more features - Nicotsu - Edmonton AB CAN
Full metal alchemist is a perfect anime, especially for someone who is a little bit new to watching anime and is just getting a feel for it. It has a perfect mix of drama, conspiracy, and humour to make it not only a form of entertainment, but it's also just fun!

The drama comes from interpersonal relationships between the characters. Most of the central characters in the show have very detailed back stories and there is major depth in antecedent events that you learn about at a good pace to keep you interested. Comedy comes mostly from the hot-headedness of Edward and the events that result from his weak control of his own temper. Conspiracy is drawn from the governing body of the realm in which the story takes place, which seems to be something of a military totalitarianistic system, and past events involving brutal war crimes and covered up incidents.

This is a great set to get for those who are new to the show and those who are not particularly interested in special features. On the dvd's there are pretty much none, except for an anime trailer on each disk. To account for this, instead, each box set has a box of "guidebooks" which, on brief initial flip-through, bascially outline the details of the world of fullmetal alchemist. I was a little disappointed about this, but not really surprised, considering this is a box set of the entire season on 4 disks, and other versions are available, such as the four part box set and the individual volumes, which I can only assume include more special features. However, if you just want to watch the show, this is a great way to get value out of it. To buy this box set in a cd and dvd store can cost upwards of 80 bucks, the volumes individually can be up to 25, so this is value for your money!

#1 Cheap Semi-Pro Reviews

Semi-Pro is yet another funny movie starring Will Ferrell to have come out in recent years and sure enough it too is reminiscent of his characters in Old School, Step Brothers, and the Wedding Crasher. The movie is set in 1976 where as player, coach, and owner of the ABA team the Michigan Tropics, not to mention choreographer, disco singer, and announcer, Jackie Moon is faced with the prospect of losing his beloved team after the league agreed with the NBA to a merger that will allow only the top four ABA teams to join the prestigious association while the rest are to dissolve.
Will Ferrell, Woody Harrelson, and the rest of the cast, have done a great with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least!
Very well written and very well presented, it allows for a highly entertaining movie that will surely provide for more than just a few laughs.
In short, Semi-Pro is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already), especially if you are Will Ferrell fan.

The trailer for this movie actually looked great and I was very excited to see it.... but the movie was slow, and unappealing for the most part. Like all Will Ferrell movies, it had some fantastic moments. A couple of "LOL" moments, but overall, the movie was pretty bad. It's funny, because I hadn't seen a Will Ferrell movie I didn't like, so I watched it again 2 days later to make sure I wasn't missing something! Sadly, I liked it even less the 2nd time. :(

#1 Cheap Marley and Me (Single-Disc Edition) Reviews

You do read that right, normally I am not very big crier at movies, but I found myself crying near the end. And if you really do have a heart, you will find yourself doing the same thing. So if you are going to watch this movie, I would suggust you have tissues opr kleenex on hand. Marley and Me tells the by a story of a young newy wed couple, and is based of a book, that I was prety much barely aware of. The book was written by John Grogan. The big question I have with the movie, is what is the timeline of the movie, know from watching the movie, that John and his wife Jenny Grogan, owned Marley for 13 years. And Marley is not a very good boy, and even at one point, he scares a house sitter, that annouces to the Grograns, that Marley is not a Dog, more lie evil with a dog face. And if you have, or see the movie you will know what I mean. The movie opens on thier wedding night, wear Joh and Jenny have a talk, which learns hem to move from Michigan to Florida, they get jobs at rival newspapers, Jenny (Jennifer Aniston) is hired at The Palm Beach Post, and John (Owen Wilson) gets a job at South Florida Sun-Sentinel, where he writes obituaries and two-paragraph articles about mundane news like a fire at the local garbage dump. His best friend Sebastian (Eric Dane) "also works there, and more or less helps him get the job. His editor is Arnie Klein(Alan Arkin). Then Jenny really gets a jump on her plans, which includes having a baby. And Sebastian sugguests to John, to get a dog to see see if they are ready to start a family. So on surpise trip, John takes Jenny to b uy a dog. The dog they select, they get, for less, then the other puppies. Jenny says he is seet like a "clearhouse puppy". Then she has to out of town for a couple of weeks, leavin John to take care of he dog. And on he car ride home, John hears "One Love" by Bob Marley, on the radio, which inspires him to call him Marley. Then Arnie offers John, his own column, and even on a tempory basis, which John has no intrest in doing, but does agree. Through during the years they have Marley, they don't age, they do have kids, and even has to face what all dog owners pretty much have to face. In less you are a dog lover, like my sister, then I don't reccomend you to watch the movie, you might even find yourself holding for dear life on your dog, if you have one.

depressing - J. Hubbard -
I thought it was going to be a good movie, but it was just sort of depressing. I don't know why, but it was. I really thought it was advertised as a comedy, which it is not. I'll give it to the local library.

#1 Cheap Moonlighting - Seasons 1 & 2 Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

I have watched for Moonlighting to come back as re-runs for a very long time and finally found out that the DVDs were available. I am so happy that I went ahead and bought them. The shows are as delightful as I remembered and I'm enjoying making my way through the season ... a show a week, just like in the "old days." Not too slick, lots of 80's style, and some truly goofy characterizations make this one of my favorite collections.

Moonlighting - Seasons 1 & 2 Overview

Maddie Hayes (Cybil Shepard), a wealthy former model, discovers one morning that her business manager has stolen all the money she has in the bank. However, it turns out that she still owns some non-liquid assets -- money-losing companies which were maintained as tax write-offs -- one of which is a detective agency run by David Addison (Bruce Willis). Maddie meets with him to inform him that the company is to be shut down, but he persuades her to keep it open by convincing her that the detective agency can make money. Maddie becomes David's new boss and accompanies him on adventure after adventure. While their personalities clash, a sexual tension arises in the time they spend together. But the question always remains... will they or won't they?

Series is Memorable and Product Packaging is Awful! - Painter in Santa Fe -
It is ashame that I must settle on 3 stars for Seasons 1&2, 3 and 4 of this wonderful series:

SERIES RATING is 5 stars (*****)

Packaging for Seasons 1-4 is 1 star (*).
Packaging for Season 5 is 5 stars (*****)!

The manufacturer must have gotten a clue by the 5th season to keep the package straight forward and safe for the disks. The packaging for Seasons 1-4 are bare cardboard covers with glued plastic pages that fall out as soon as the shrink wrap is removed.

My solution for the packaging was to use multi-disc covers, cut up the original cardboard cover, insert them into the new covers and VOILA! I have myself the same packaging as Season 5's package.

It has been years since I have seen any of the episodes. Even then I was not able to catch all of them in order. What a treat!

My Mama told me about this great movie and how funny it was. So as a surprise I purchased it for a great price from Amazon. When it came we both stopped what we were doing and turned it on...and laughed and laughed.

What an interesting concept to train your husband like a pet! I also enjoyed how Chantel's parents were still so in love with each other. Eugene and Chantel made such a lovely couple and her clothes were so cute.

It reminded me of the Doris Day classic "that touch of mink" that I love and it is right up there in my collection of old comedies.

If only they could make movies like they used to!

I would recommend this movie to any classic movie buff

#1 Cheap Leave It to Beaver - The Complete Second Season Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Despite airing over 50 years ago, I still get the same chuckles and good feelings watching these TV episodes today. They are timeless and priceless and usually give good life lessons, without shoving anything down your throat. The older you are, the more you appreciate this show and the great writing in it.

Anyway, new friends come and go in a few of these second season episodes, people like "Chuey," who Beaver unintentionally hurts by telling the Hispanic boy, "You have a face like a pig" when he meant something else. Guess who was behind that insult? Yup, the evil "Eddie Haskell," who "teaches" Beaver some Spanish.

Then there is old Gus, at the Fire Hall, the quirky "Gilbert," the loser Larry Mondello, the tattletale "Judy" and a bunch of others as well as reliable older brother Wally and Beaver's two solid parents, Ward and June. Who can forget these names?

There are 39 episodes so you can a lot of material, making the set a good buy at almost any price. I enjoyed this so much that I've been almost heartbroken that no DVDs have been issued since. My guess is there were not enough people like me who loved this show enough to buy these first two DVD sets. Still, "Leave It To Beaver" is one of the more famous TV shows in history it would be nice to have them available to anyone who wants a complete history of it.

Leave It to Beaver - The Complete Second Season Overview

America’s quintessential family returns with all 39 original, uncut episodes of Leave It to Beaver Season 2! Return to Mayfield for a warm welcome from its most charming family -- the Cleavers: wise pop Ward (Hugh Beaumont), resourceful mother June (Barbara Billingsley), curious older brother Wally (Tony Dow), and lovable, scruffy Theodore "Beaver" (Jerry Mathers). From building a boat to beating a bully to dealing with girls (cooties!), there’s nothing the two Cleaver boys can’t handle with a little luck and a lot of wholesome, homespun advice. Digitally remastered for optimum picture and audio quality, critics declare "…this 1957-1963 sitcom is as enjoyable today for its ‘50s nostalgia as it was then for its modern, understated humor" (David Bianculli, New York Daily News). Gee whiz!

Good old fashioned television - truth seeker -
I could watch these all weekend long. Great stories with no violence,or language or commercials. previews up front but you can ff past. Great influence on my son. Great family relationships with trust, problem solving skills and laughter, the family dinner table, harmless mischief. (That Larry Mondello). Just bought season 1 as well. Life was wonderful back then. I sure miss that.

#1 Cheap Practical Magic (Snap Case) Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Not your typical chick flick but a very good chick flick nonetheless. My second favorite movie of all time. Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock are wonderful as actresses in this movie. Stockard Channing also makes a wonderful cast member as do the other supporting actors and actresses. The movie begins with their great-great-grandmother being tried for witchcraft and escaping the gallows only to be banished to an island where her lover never came to her, while she was pregnant. In a moment of dispair, she cast a spell on herself that she would never feel the pain of love again. It grew into a curse on any man who dared love an Owens woman. Sally (Bullock) wants nothing more than to be normal. Gillian (Kidman) can't wait to fall in love. When she grows up, Gillian falls for the "Dracula-cowboy" named Jimmy Angelove. The two accidentally kill Angelove and try to bring him back, only to have him posses Gillian. I won't ruin the ending. If you haven't seen this movie, or even if it is an old favorite, like it is for me, I highly recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in the occult or has a little bit of witchiness to them. Happy viewing!

Practical Magic (Snap Case) Overview

If a broom falls, company is due. When a circle rings the moon, trouble looms, Should you misplace your broom, sorry; a hand vac can't be used in an exorcism rite. Fun and excitement abound in the Owens family of wily witches. One problem, though: the men the Owens women fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman bring a sparkling screen magic to Practical Magic, adapted from Alice Hoffman's bestseller and directed by Griffin Dunne (Addicted to Love). They play Sally and Gillian Owens, sisters hexed by a centuries -old curse...and coping with a witches brew of events involving a possible love match (Aidan Quinn) for one, a zombie (Goran Visnjic) for the other and a need to resume the age-old witchcraft taught by two doting Owens aunts (Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest). Sit for a spell and enjoy.

This movie was very entertaining. I think that Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman did great together. A bewitching movie. This movie has everything from supernatural to horror.

#1 Cheap Sesame Street - Zoe's Dance Moves Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

My granddaughter is three years old, and she almost has this video memorized. She loves to dress like Zoe and Paula (with clip-on earrings and all). I think this would be a great video for even smaller children, because they love Elmo and Zoe so much.

It's just amazing to see how many of the dance moves a just-turned-three-year-old can follow!

Sesame Street - Zoe's Dance Moves Overview

Get ready to dance! It's a toe-tapping, finger-snapping good time when Paula Abdul gives Zoe her very first dance lesson! Soon Sesame Street's favorite ballerina is learning how to step with pep in a ballet warm-up, get the beat in her feet from an African drum, be grand with her hands in an Asian dance, and just have fun with Zoe's own Silly Willy Nilly dance. And, that's not all! When Zoe's best friend Elmo joins in, everyone moves and grooves to a hip-hop, feel-good finale that will get you up and dancing along! Special DVD Bonus Feature: Paula Abdul's view on Dance, kids and growing up with Sesame Street! DVD includes free bonus CD sampler! Features 3 songs from Seasame Street's Hot Hot Hot Dance Songs!

Entertaining- not Instructional - Ariane Newell - Orem, UT USA
Mixed feelings here. My granddaughter, aged 3, loved it, especially the muppets, the African section, Zoe's crazy dancing section, all of the ethnic dancing. We had to scurry around for all the props that the video kids were using. She watched it over and over trying to copy everything. However, most of her time was spent standing around glued to the screen. This is look at me, copy me pseudo dance instruction. However, some of the moves are downright dangerous for young children to try and copy. Changements, are you kidding me? (not even for 8 year olds from a video) Not unless you want severe knee and ankle problems. "Copy me" instruction has severe limitations. For young children problem solving emphasizing shapes, levels, directions, rhythm, and energy qualities lay a more substantial educational groundwork for dance appreciation. And creative dance problem solving is infinitely better suited to the charms of the Muppets!

#1 Cheap Hobson's Choice - Criterion Collection Reviews

Available at Amazon Limited Special Price!! See Now!!

Having grown up on the more well known films of David Lean, from his 1940s period pieces, like Great Expectations and Oliver Twist, to his famed epics, The Bridge On The River Kwai, Lawrence Of Arabia, and Dr. Zhivago, I was surprised to learn that he even made comedies. In fact, he only made two, 1945's Blithe Spirit, based on a Noel Coward play, and the film under review, 1954's Hobson's Choice (Lean's last black and white film), also based upon a play- a 1916 play of the same title by Harold Brighouse. While this film is not in a league with the aforementioned classics, it is a very good film, and often quite humorous; yet this is all due to Lean's direction and trimming away of some of the narrative fat from the play in favor of unique cinematic expression, starting from the opening shots that define the workplace of Henry Hobson (Charles Laughton, in one of his better late roles, after his career started a long, slow fade) to the many precise positionings of characters within the film frame, to the degree that many scenes play out as living detailed paintings from the very era the film is set in- the late 19th Century. One particularly well wrought scene comes near the film's end when Hobson's oldest daughter confers with a doctor about her father's condition, and instead of the camera following them for what will be a perfunctory exchange it stays with Laughton, who gives a bravura scene of underacted rage and calm in one.

Hobson's Choice is not a highly regarded film in Lean's canon, and in comparison to some of the aforementioned classics, the reason why is obvious- it's only a very good film in a career littered with great works. But, it was recognized by the critics of the time, and won the 1954 Best Film Award from the British Academy of Film. The only negative in the film is the over the top burlesque music of Malcolm Arnold. Yes, the film is a comedy, but it's nowhere near slapstick. That said, it is also an enjoyable film, and dominated by the female presence in the film, a rarity in Lean's canon. A good film, an excellent ensemble of DVD features, and this bit of minor English film history becomes one of the better DVD releases in recent years. See for yourself, as it will soon be released to the general public. Now that's a choice old Hobson could live with.

Surpirised how I fell in love with this movie. - S. Holland -
I really enjoy David Lean films, and I watched this not knowing beforehand what it was about.

I know the phrase "Hobson's choice" is Cockney Rhymming Slang for "voice"; and the phrase means to be given only one choice; the choice to accept what is offered or nothing at all.

The story is about a retailer named Hobson who is a widower with 3 adult daughters. One day he decides the two younger daughers are too silly and expensive to have around and so he becomes determinded to marry them off.

The eldest daughter is very good at housekeeping and tending the family boot shop and so he wants her to stay; therefore he tells her she is an old spinster past the age to marry. Well this goads her into taking fate into her own hands.

We start to see a shift in the meaning of the title; perhaps its referring just as much or moreso for the eldest daughter as for her father. I also like the moral lesson of equality offered for couples who are already married or considering marriage.

The story kept me guessing until the very end, and I found myself falling in love with the story. Its very well told and very funny but under the humor is this shining truth that persists and inspires me forward.

I heartily recommend this film to everyone. The message of story is certainly far ahead of its time, and still very relevant now.
