#1 Cheap Elvira's Haunted Hills Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

For those not in the know, ELVIRA is the amazing creation of actress extraordinaire CASSANDRA PETERSON!!! Die hard fans have been waiting for a second vehicle for sooo long and will be rewarded with this wonderfully wacky parody/tribute of the 1960's Corman/Poe/Price horror films. ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS is not a sequel to the much beloved 1988 camp classic ELVIRA MISTRESS OF THE DARK, but rather an entirely new an equally fulfilling celuloid romp. I find ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS 1851 Carpathia the perfect realm for ELVIRA to be forever cemented in. We find our heroine surrounded in Gothic atmosphere haunting the same fogged hallways she used to host on MOVIE MACABRE, all the while spoofing too many Comedy/Horror genres and cliches to count. ELVIRA's in top form both physically and comically; as her impecable line delivery and enchanting gorgeous animated face once again crown her THE QUEEN OF HALLOWEEN - not to mention the humor genre Camp! The film has some hilarious moments and is a brilliant homage to the above mentioned people, films, and stories. Made on a shoestring budget and filmed in Romania; this movie nonetheless has some stricking sets, interesting location work, and a emotive soundtract featuring the Russian State Orchestra. We find ELVIRA on route to "gay paree" so she can do her "Yes I Can-Can" review with her French Maid only to get stranded at a haunted castle. There we have the crazed Lord of the castle (Richard O'Brian), his evil wife, his past dead wife who just happens to look exactly like ELVIRA, a Stable Stud, witty dialogue, and that rather nasty pit and pendulum in the dungeon. Sucked into a tornado of family disfunson, will Elvira and her French Maid ever get out of the creepy castle with their lives!?! My only resurvation about this work is that at times it could have a little more bite, and that the secend half needs a little more infusion of humor admits all the drama. Despite these minor grievances ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS does have plenty going for it, and I think will please please her radically diverse fanbase. I just love this film and find it a hell of alot of fun - so I strongly recommend it to anyone who's in a campy silly cheeze-ball sort of mood! I'm gratful that it was ever made at all, as sadly the ELVIRA character has only stared in two featured films. Grossly underused by the Hollywood establishment, I can't help but think of all the great "Camp Extravaganzas" she could have done already that we could be enjoy today. On the sunny side enjoy the two films of hers we do have and let ELVIRA'S HAUNTED HILLS bring a little laughter into your world - UNPLEASANT DREAMS !!!!!

Elvira's Haunted Hills Overview

The audience for this rickety spoof is probably limited to three groups: diehard fans of Elvira, cultists of '60s horror (specifically the Edgar Allan Poe and Hammer offerings), and people who believe rim-shot, borscht belt humor ought to be brought back. The last group apparently includes Cassandra Peterson, the comedian who dreamed up Elvira; her fondness for vaudeville one-liners is either groan-worthy or infectious, depending on your tolerance for such things. Sample: "The village people say this castle is evil." "Ah, who listens to the Village People any more?" Ouch. Her Mae-West-meets-Vampira shtick wears surprisingly well at feature length (1988's Elvira, Mistress of the Dark is actually a pretty good time), although this movie simply runs out of material halfway through. Bonus: Rocky Horror genius Richard O'Brien contributes some amusing ravings as a mysterious Carpathian castle owner, pining away for a dead wife who suspiciously resembles our heroine. --Robert Horton

Elvira's haunted hills - mother of 2 - Santa Ana, CA
Being a fan of Elvira, loved Elvira mistress of the dark, not being familiar with old Roger Korman(Corman) movies, I first thought is was a bit cheesy, but once I saw the commentary, I understood the concept of the movie and improved my opinion, it has some laughs, and funny dirty song called " Le music hall" I bought it on itunes of course.

#1 Cheap All Creatures Great & Small - The Complete Series 2 Collection Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

When James Herriot's first book came out decades ago, I was a neophyte book reviewer for a big city newspaper. At the time, I predicted that the book would be a smash hit. It surpassed any expectations my imagination could have conjured up. Later, the British TV series picked up the ball and ran with it.
Whenever I'm down-in-the-dumps, I pick up the Series 2 collection and put on the Christmas at Skeldale House episode, which comprises all that is so heartwarming about the series, including the finding and bringing home of the Christmas tree, the healing of a little girl's beloved pony, and the gift of the mistletoe. If I were marooned on a desert island, this is one of the collections I would want with me. One never tires of the evocative opening musical theme, nor of traveling to England's pre-WW II Yorkshire Dales to once more be in the presence of the irascible Siegfried, the dedicated James and his patient wife, the hormonal Tristan, and the Darrowby regulars, including Tricky Woo and Mrs. Pumphrey.

The series belongs in a space capsule so a thousand years from now, if civilization has survived, viewers can discover some of the best of times that existed before some of the worst of times.

Having grown up on a farm, I well recall the veterinarian's visits, so I should add a warning -- Be prepared: Impressionable young children may ask a lot of questions, such as, "Why does that man have his hand inside the cow?" or, in the birthing scenes, "How did that baby lamb get inside the mother?" There is a scene of a horse being gelded, and also a few scenes of animals being euthanized. They are low-key and not sensationalized, but could easily disturb a sensitive child, so parents may want to pre-view the series and decide whether they find such scenes suitable for child viewers, especially those prone to nightmares. Aside of that, I can't think of a better introduction to the rewards of helping animals and being kind to them than the Herriot series.

One of the best BBC series ever written - I. Snook - chicago
This is a wonderful series based on the books by James Harriet. Well acted and written. Television the way it was meant to be. Beautifully filmed in Britain the series takes place just prior to and into WWII. The life of a country vet with rich characters. Compelling stories of tragedy, Humor, compassion, and love of the animal kingdom as well as the harsh reality of controlling disease and the difficulty of raising livestock in pre war Britain. I grew up with this BBC series broadcast on public television, the only place you can get great programming. Truly a wonderful family show to watch together. No violence, obscenity, or innuendo to be had, I always feel better after watching an episode or two.

My husband was not a regular viewer of SNL, so I wanted him to see some of Baldwin's best work. We were very pleased with the selections on the DVD. However, I had hoped to see one of the skits where he portrayed a vamapire and would "float" into the dining room of a spooky old castle. It was a hilarious skit that he played wonderfully.

Whether he's playing a Scout Master seducing "Canteen Boy", a French teacher annoying his students, a Tough Guy or just talking about his famous "Schwetty Balls", Alec Baldwin is undoubtedly one of the funniest SNL hosts of all time. He's become a regular, playing in sketches throughout the years with some of the SNL greats including Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Adam Sandler and Will Ferrell. You're sure to enjoy some of Alec's hilarious celebrity impressions, such as Tony Bennett and Charles Nelson Reilly. And if you've ever wondered what it’s like to actually host SNL, you'll want to check out the DVD extras and bonus features, such as the audio commentary from Alec Baldwin himself as he comments on various sketches, as well as never-before-seen footage from dress rehearsals that never made it to television!

Vive The French Teacher! - Lexi Sargent - Canton, Md USA
I have been showing "The French Teacher" to my high school classes for over a decade. They LOVE it! So, when I saw this was the only way to get the DVD copy I purchased it. He has totally captured Robert de Niro's essence. Other gems include the candidate for governor, the gay phone message maker, and the marine captured in China. Seeing the old gang makes this DVD fun to watch.

#1 Cheap Up In Smoke (1978) / Still Smokin (1983) (Double Feature) Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

All I got to say is, "Good Movies" and "Funny" "So When are they gonna make pot legal already?" I guess they aint done making money with lawyers and court cost. Thats probably the only way a greedy government like ours can make any money off it. Thats because its too easy to grow. If it were legal millions of people would probably grow it themselves. And I know from expierence that its a far better high than drinking booze or beer. Ive seen people get violent while drinking. But I never seen a stoner get violent while stoned. Maybe alot of people would be more relaxed if it were really legal? Not to mention there might be less violent crimes in the U.S. So why dont they just let us have it already? It really calms people down. Not to mention there might be less casualties due to D.W.I.'s. Anyway, I know from expierence that Its far better on the body than drinking is. Probably because your more relaxed when your stoned. But booze makes more money so its legal. All I got to say is they should get there priorities straight. And leave us potheads alone. Its ironic how this is suppose to be a free country. But your not free to smoke grass. (Just ask Tommy Chong.) All because of greedy polititions. Just go figure.

Up In Smoke (1978) / Still Smokin (1983) (Double Feature) Overview

Two of Cheech and Chong's greatest movies brought together in this Double Feature. The classic Up in Smoke and hilarious Still Smokin.

very funny movies but when do we get a blu ray version? - Michael P. Dobey - colorado springs
The two movies should be doubled up on a blu ray release. It would be about time for that I would say. The first is a real classic and the second lays down more funny stuff to enjoy. It's vintage doper humour gone wild and they stand up today very well because the two leads have alot of talent.

#1 Cheap The Simpsons - The Complete Second Season Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Hello, Joe! I turned 10 halfway through this season and even though I remember loving the first one, this second season and the third have most nostalgic magic in my memory. Reminds me of going to visit relatives and watching Simpsons during Thanksgiving or Christmas with the family (before the show got too preachy after season 10) and us genuinely laughing at the animated hilarity together. It was something I'm glad to have in my heart, and the Simpsons were the emulsifier and the ice breaker for meeting many new friends along my life. A good barometer for people was to watch an episode of the Simpsons with them. If they didn't like it, chances were our personalities were just too different. Unfortunately this trick only worked within the confines of the first 10 seasons, after that they become aimless and a bit contrived. From now on, the baby sleeps in the crib.

#1 Cheap It's Complicated Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

I am not one to buy a movie for myself. Usually I am happy with renting it, but 'It's Complicated' was so hysterical, I needed my own copy. I first saw it in the theatres with my girlfriends - We all loved it !! Then I watched it at home with my teenage kids (a boy and a girl) and they thought it was hilarious too. Meryl Streep is.... well, Meryl Streep, and great - as always - but I personally think Alec Baldwin owns this film. I was made an immediate fan of his after this. (Meryl already had me as a fan, esp Mamma Mia - another surprisingly great movie/purchase). I will not ruin the movie, but i think you are dead if you do not laugh - and hard - and multiple times !!!

It's Complicated Overview

Two-time Academy Award® winner Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin star in this hilarious look at marriage, divorce and everything in between. Jane (Streep) has three grown kids, a thriving Santa Barbara bakery and an amicable relationship with her ex-husband, Jake (Baldwin). Now, a decade after their divorce, an innocent dinner between Jane and Jake turns into the unimaginable - an affair. Caught in the middle of their rekindled romance are Jake’s young wife and Adam (Martin), a recently divorced architect who starts to fall for Jane. Could love be sweeter the second time around? It’s… complicated! From writer/director Nancy Meyers comes the comedy that critics call "laugh-out-loud funny" (Rex Reed, The New York Observer).

Outstanding Movie - Darrell E. Fisher - Lincoln, Nebraska
This movie was hysterical! Normally NOT a fan of Meryl Streep or Alec Baldwin (but a huge fan of Steve Martin), we still thoroughly enjoyed this movie.

#1 Cheap Paper Moon Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Tatum O'Neal's Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, won at the age of ten, was not only inappropriate (she actually has more screentime than her dad, putative lead actor Ryan O'Neal), it remains controversial. But the award really has to be seen as a tribute of sorts to director Peter Bogdanovich, who exacted an astonishingly assured, deadpan comic performance out of her, and then built an almost perfect piece of cinema around it. In the 1970s, when tough, gritty films were the flavour of the day, this seemingly simple, depression-era comedy, filmed in sepia-toned black-and-white, seemed way out of place. But this movie has it all: period detail, brilliant dialogue, wonderful performances, and elegantly economical storytelling. This DVD is especially valuable for Bogdanovich's commentary track, which is almost a master class in filmmaking, explaining how everything from filtered or wide-angle lenses, deep-focus cinematography, cutting on motion, or creating intimacy or tension through camera set-ups, can be used in service of the story. Bogdanovich also notes where he had to coach Tatum, and where she also simply surprised him by being preternaturally skillful or creative. There's one long scene shot in a moving car, full of dialogue and other "business" (as Bogdanovich refers to his actress' handling of props) between Tatum and Ryan, that is played without cuts, and, while Bogdanovich notes how many takes it took, he is also generous enough to acknowledge his child star's skill in pulling it off. As an honour to an entire film built around what may be the best-directed child performance of all time, Tatum's Oscar was well-deserved.

Paper Moon Overview

Adapted from the novel "Addie Pray" by Joe David Brown, PAPER MOON is set in the Midwest during the Great Depression, and follows the story of Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal), a happy-go-lucky con artist who travels through the Midwest on a mission to swindle money out of innocent widows. While attending a friend’s funeral, Pray is called upon by two elderly ladies to deliver the daughter of the deceased, Addie (Tatum O’Neal), to her aunt in Missouri. Soon learning that the 9-year-old is almost as mischievous and manipulative as he is, Pray and Addie develop a father and daughter routine that increases their credibility as well as their income. Now, the devious duo set out on a series of misadventures involving crooked cops, bootleggers, grieving widows and a Carney dancer named Miss Trixie Delight (Kahn) who adds a little spice to their routine.

I found this movie amusing and refreshing. It comes from an intelligent point of view, but without being like one of those horrible, pretentious, stupid movies that the film critics praise. I loved it when Boris (a genius) insults average/stupid people and christians. I love how this movie promotes atheism. I think it's very stupid to believe in a god. I have a very high IQ also. I've always been surrounded by idiots and I frequently resent that. This is actually the only Woody Allen movie I've ever enjoyed. He normally makes stupid little awful movies that the critics love and that I hate. I can't get enough of Larry David. He's what made this movie good. I've seen every episode of Curb your Enthusiasm and now I'm watching all the Seinfeld episodes. I hope Larry David will make many more movies. I hope he makes some really big, successful comedies and not just do small movies such as this one. I don't care if you don't like my review.

More appropriate as a made-for-TV movie. - Tom Brody - Berkeley, CA
WHATEVER WORKS is a drama taking place in a middle-class residential neighborhood in New York City, complete with Jewish delicatessens and art galleries. This type of neighborhood is familiar to me, as I have toured the SoHo district in lower Manhattan many times. In part, because of this, the storyline of WHATEVER WORKS was continually fascinating to me. The film takes place in the present day, that is, circa 2009.

In brief, a runaway girl materializes on the doorstep of a retired physics professor. The professor is a confirmed curmudgeon and, to some extent, a misanthrope. His manner of speech takes the form of amusing 1-liners, regarding the fruitlessness of human society. The professor takes the girl in, and she lives with him, and they have a sort of father/daughter relationship. Over the course of weeks, the girl adopts the same speech patterns as the professor, and she spews out the same amusing 1-liners about the futility of human society. The girl's father and mother, both devoted Christians, split up prior to the girl's running away from home. The problem was that the father was having an affair with another woman.

The girl is from the American South, and prefers Louisiana-style cooking, and has a southern accent. About half-way into the movie, the girl's mother materializes at the front door of the professor's house. Unexpectedly, the mother quickly adopts to the lifestyle of New York City, and her collection of casual family snapshots is "discovered" by an art critic, and the mother has an art exhibition in a gallery (not an exhibition in a mere coffeeshop). Also, the mother acquires two boyfriends. One of the boyfriends is a middle-aged man who is a philosophy professor. Towards the end of the movie, the girl's father materializes at the front door of the professor's house. He also, came is search of the runaway daughter. As the man's character develops, during the remaining thirty or so minutes of the film, he discovers that he is really gay, and he quickly develops a gay relationship with a man he finds in a tavern.

On the plus side, the film takes place in New York City and concerns art galleries. By the same token, this is one of the reasons I liked another movie, AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Also on the plus side, the actress playing the girl is abundantly easy on the eye. But on the minus side, WHATEVER WORKS is fraught with improbabilities. First of all, it is not often that an astonishingly beautiful girl shows up on a man's doorsteps, as a runaway. Second, it is not often that a 20-year old girl marries a 70-year old man who is a retired professor (that is what happens in WHATEVER WORKS). Third, it is not often that a southern housewife is promoted as a photographer, on the basis of her "portfolio" of casual family snapshots. Fourth, it is not often that a physics professor tries twice to commit suicide (that's what happens in WHATEVER WORKS). To conclude, this movie consists of a re-cycling of things that Woody Allen likes and finds dear (younger girlfriends, New York City art galleries, talking about existentialism in ordinary conversations). We have seen the same themes, again and again, since the 1970s. (There is nothing wrong with this, per se.) The contrived marriage of the 70-year old man with the 20-year old girl, obviously mirrors Woody Allen's own marriage to a woman (Soon-Yi) who is thirty years younger than himself.

WHATEVER WORKS could very well be the very best of all of the Woody Allen films that utilize the above collection of themes. But on the other hand, what prevents this movie from having much more value than a typical made-for-TV movie, is that fact that it consists of a studied melange of incoherent and incompatible things, squeezed and forced together, into a single storyline. (Also, this movie is NOT a comedy. There is nothing here to make you laugh. The movie is merely amusing.) Perhaps the only believable part of WHATEVER WORKS, is the professor's schmoozing with his friends, at a sidewalk coffeeshop. In fact, if the entire movie had taken place on the sidewalk table, at the coffeeshop, documented the conversations of three mature men, I might have given the film FIVE STARS. In other words, if this movie was more like, MY DINNER WITH ANDRE (it seemed at the beginning to be a bit like My Dinner With Andre), then that would have been fine with me.

The star of this movie is Mr. Larry David. Mr. David is one of the most successful people in the history of Hollywood, having been one of the founders of the SEINFELD show, and having written 62 episodes of SEINFELD. However, if the movie WHATEVER WORKS does not (in my opinion) work as a coherent piece of drama, then it is also my opinion that it is that it is a THREE STAR or, at most, a FOUR STAR film.

#1 Cheap The Producers (Deluxe Edition) Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

...on one another. Mostel is so manic and barbarian, Wilder so panicked and hysterical, you wonder why spit didn't get on the camera lens. The whole movie is pitched at that level of frenzied desperation, and one of the many joys of watching it is to see how the actors are able to control timing and nuance even while screaming.

This is one of the funniest movies ever made. To see it now is to understand that. To see it for the first time in 1968, when I did, was to witness audacity so liberating that not even "There's Something About Mary" rivals it. The movie was like a bomb going off inside the audience's sense of propriety. There is such rapacity in its heroes, such gleeful fraud, such greed, such lust, such a willingness to compromise every principle, that we cave in and go along.

The movie stars Mostel and Wilder as Max Bialystock, a failing Broadway producer, and Leo Bloom, a nebbishy accountant. Bialystock raises money for his productions by seducing checks out of little old ladies, who come to his office to fool around ("We'll play the innocent little milkmaid and the naughty stable boy!"). Bloom is sent to do his books, and finds that Bialystock raised ,000 more than he lost on his last failure. You could make a lot of money by overfinancing turkeys, he muses, a glint in his eye: "The IRS isn't interested in flops."

This leads to their great inspiration: Max will venture into "little old lady-land" and raise thousands of dollars more than they need for a production that will be guaranteed to fail. The critic David Ehrenstein traces the first use of the phrase "creative accounting" to "The Producers," and Bialystock and Bloom make it into a fine art. "Hello, boys!" says Max, plopping down next to his safe and patting the piles of money.

Their formula for failure is a musical named "Springtime for Hitler," with a dance line of jackbooted SS girls and lyrics like, "Don't be stupid, be a smarty! Come and join the Nazi Party!" Their neo-Nazi playwright Franz Liebkind (Kenneth Mars) roars up to opening night on a motorcycle, wears a Nazi helmet into the lobby, and tells them, "It's magic time!" Reaction shots during the first act show the audience paralyzed in slack-jawed horror.

How did Mel Brooks, the writer and director, get away with this? By establishing the amoral desperation of both key characters at the outset, and by casting them with actors you couldn't help liking, even so. Like Falstaff, Zero Mostel's Max Bialystock is a man whose hungers are so vast they excuse his appetites. There is a scene where he scrubs his filthy office window with coffee, peers through the murk, sees a white Rolls-Royce and screams, "That's it, baby! When you've got it, flaunt it! Flaunt it!" You can taste his envy and greed. "See this?" he says to Bloom, holding up an empty setting. "This used to hold a pearl as big as your eye. Look at me now! I'm wearing a cardboard belt!" It is typical of this movie that after he says the line, he takes off the belt and rips it to shreds.

Mostel was a serious actor, a blacklist target, an intellectual. His performance here is a masterpiece of low comedy. Despite a comb-over that starts just above his collar line, he projects optimistic vanity, spitting on his hand to slick back his hair before Miss "Hold me! Touch me!" (Estelle Winwood) enters for her weekly visit. What Mostel projects above all is utter confidence. He never has second thoughts. Perhaps he never thinks at all, but only proceeds out of Darwinian urgency.

Gene Wilder was a new face in 1968, introduced to audiences with a key supporting role in "Bonnie and Clyde" (1967), also as a character consumed by nervousness. His performance in "The Producers" is a shade shy of a panic attack. On the floor with Mostel looming over him, he screams, "Don't jump! Don't jump!" Mostel starts to hop in a frenzy, and Wilder escapes to a corner, hides behind a chair, and screams, "I'm hysterical! I'm hysterical!" Mostel pours a glass of water and throws it in his face. Wilder delivers another classic line: "I'm wet! I'm hysterical, and I'm wet! I'm in pain, and I'm wet, and I'm still hysterical!"

The movie's supporting stars became briefly famous after the movie came out, although none found equally funny material again. Mars was a bug-eyed fanatic, up on the roof with his pigeons, singing Nazi songs, later ordering an audience member to stop laughing because "I am the author! I outrank you!" To the Nazi jokes Brooks added gay jokes, with the flamboyant couple of Broadway director Roger De Bris (Christopher Hewett) and his valet Carmen Giya (Andreas Voutsinas). At one point Max, Leo and Carmen crowd into a tiny elevator, and are expelled breathless and flustered. Heterosexuality is represented by the pneumatic Lee Meredith, as Ulla, the buxom secretary, who types one letter at a time and then pauses for a smile of self-congratulation. The other great supporting performance is by Dick Shawn as the actor who plays Hitler; in a movie made at the height of the flower power period, he's a hippie constructed out of spare parts, with his finger cymbals, Campbell's soup can necklace and knee-high shag boots.

To produce a musical named "Springtime for Hitler" was of course in the worst possible taste, as an escaping theater patron observes in the movie--to the delight of Bialystock and Bloom, who were counting on just that reaction. To make a movie about such a musical was also in bad taste, of course. It is obvious that Bialystock and Bloom are Jewish, but they never refer to that. As Franz Liebkind rants, they nod, because the more offensive he is, the more likely his play will fail. Brooks adds just one small moment to suggest their private thoughts. As the two men walk away from the playwright's apartment, Bloom covers the red-and-black Nazi armband Franz has given him. "All right, take off the armband," says Bialystock, taking off his own. They throw both armbands into a trash can. Leo spits into it, and then Max does.

The best sight gag in the movie is the one at the end of a long day spent by Max and Leo walking around Manhattan and perfecting their scheme. Finally at night they find themselves in front of the fountain at Lincoln Center. The music swells. Leo cries, "I want everything I've ever seen in the movies!" And then the fountain leaps up. Everyone remembers the fountain. The music and the dialogue make it into a punch line instead of just a surprise.

Like most of Brooks' films, "The Producers" is cheerfully willing to go anywhere for a laugh. In Brooks' next film, "Blazing Saddles" (1974), he produced the famous campfire scene, long before Eddie Murphy's Klumps had their troubles with intestinal gas. Gene Wilder worked with him again in the wonderful "Young Frankenstein" (also 1974), and Brooks has remained prolific; high points are "Silent Movie" (1976), with its narcissistic Burt Reynolds shower scene; the Hitchcock spoof "High Anxiety" (1977), where the tracking shot breaks a plate-glass window, and the underrated "Life Stinks" (1991), inspired by Preston Sturges' "Sullivan's Travels."

Mel Brooks began in big-time show business as a writer for Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows" in 1950; Carl Reiner and Neil Simon were fellow writers. That he didn't have a career as a stand-up comedian is surely only because he chose not to.

I remember finding myself in an elevator with Brooks and his wife, actress Anne Bancroft, in New York City a few months after "The Producers" was released. A woman got onto the elevator, recognized him and said, "I have to tell you, Mr. Brooks, that your movie is vulgar." Brooks smiled benevolently. "Lady," he said, "it rose below vulgarity."

The Producers (Deluxe Edition) Overview

A "startling, stunning, outrageous [and] breathtaking debut" (Los Angeles Times) from acclaimed writer/director Mel Brooks (Young Frankenstein, Spaceballs), this Oscar®-winning* comedy combines "pure pell-Mel lunacy [and] wild, ad-lib energy [into an] uproariously funny" (Time) film! Low-rent Broadway producer Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) and his high-strung accountant, Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder), discover that, with the help of a few gullible investors, they can make more money on a flop than on a hit! Armed with the worst show ever written ("Springtime for Hitler") and an equally horrific cast, this double-dealing duo is banking on disaster. But when their sure-to-offend musical becomes a surprise smash hit, they find themselves in the middleof a Broadway blitzkrieg! *1968: Original Screenplay

Is this DVD widescreen or fullscreen? - Dan Curtis Fan -
Can someone help me out here. I have always been an avid fan of Mel Brooks' original 1968 film, "The Producers". I had it on VHS in the fullscreen version and I also have the 2003 widescreen DVD version with aspect ratio of 1.85:1. However, when comparing these two versions, I notice that the widescreen version is nothing more than the fullscreen version with the top and bottom chopped off. Now I am considering buying the 2005 Deluxe Edition, but I would like to know whether it is wide or full. The product description says that the aspect ratio is 1.33:1, but it also lists it as being both widescreen and fullscreen. I usually prefer widescreen, but not if the top and bottom are chopped off to create a widescreen effect. Does anyone know how this film was originally released in the theater. If it was originally released in fullscreen then that is the format that I would prefer to have. If it was originally released in widescreen, then does a version exist which is authentically widescreen or is there only the version with the top and bottom chopped off. After comparing the two versions, the chopped version seems to be a bit crowded. To complicate matters even more, I notice that the 2002 Special Edition DVD is listed with an aspect ratio of 1.66:1. Any help would be greatly apprciated.

#1 Cheap The Middle: The Complete First Season Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

I don't watch television - too many laugh tracks and reality shows and shows that look the same as the one before and after. I check out the interesting stuff when/if it gets to dvd. No commercials, wheee! People at work usually talk about the various things they watch, and The Middle is frequently discussed. I watched an episode and decided I'd be interested to see more of these folks. (A big commitment for me.) This show doesn't force laughs or situations. We spend time with the Heck family, choose a favorite character in an episode and watch to see how they will solve/resolve issues that are familiar to us all. After a few episodes, these folks become part of our thoughts and we are curious to see (show after show) how they are doing. I think about the characters as neighbors or relatives - they are familiar.
Each has his/her own issues and concerns and we are there for them and with them. The first season dvd brings it all together and the extras are informative and fun. The cast is well-cast; occasional guest stars are fun to see in a Mid-West setting.
Give the Heck Family some of your time. Get to know them. They grow on you in the nicest possible way. (They'd watch you...)

The Middle: The Complete First Season Overview

Patricia Heaton stars as Frankie Heck in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Frankie Heck is a superhero. Well, no, not an actual superhero - but sometimes it seems to Frankie as though getting her kids out the door for school every morning is a superheroic act. Middle aged, middle class and living in the middle of the country, this harried wife and working mother of three uses her wry wit and sense of humor to try to get her family through each day intact.

#1 Cheap The Teahouse Of The August Moon (DVD) Marlon Brando, Glenn Ford Reviews

Great movie. I love the cast. The first time I watched this I had to look hard to see Marlon Brando. I was looking for him as normal Brando not Japanese Brando. He really looked the part. This is a great movie with great humor in it. It is a must have in any classic DVD collection.

The Teahouse Of The August Moon (DVD) Marlon Brando, Glenn Ford Feature

Weird Marlon Brando Picture. - Austin Somlo - Vincentown, NJ
Viewed: 7/09
Rate: 6

7/09: The Teahouse of the August Moon initially had me under the impression that it was going to be a Brando film. However, that was not the case at all. In fact, he only had a very minimum presence, but that didn't mean the film was terrible. On the contrary, I enjoyed it only to a certain extent. Glenn Ford clearly stole the show as he portrayed himself an affable solider who showed a change of heart through seeing effects on his attitude after experiencing a culture change. The result was quite enjoyable and sensible fun. On the other hand, I found the film to be quite unconventional and sometimes awkward to watch. One distracting part about it is the sight of Marlon Brando's face as if he just came back from a major Botox treatment. It would make a lot more sense if he was eliminated from the film altogether and be substituted with a real Japanese actor. Nevertheless, Brando did a magnificent job disguising himself as a Japanese because I couldn't tell many times if it was him or not. Some parts of the film were slow and didn't add much to the overall story. That caused choppiness in the pacing of The Teahouse of the August Moon. All in all, for what it's worth, I actually enjoyed The Teahouse of the August Moon although it is a very weird picture.

#1 Cheap All About My Mother Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

I've seen a few of Almodovar's films: some I liked a lot, some not-so-much. This falls into the "pretty good" category for me. The story is unconventional, to say the least and the characters diverge greatly from people most of us are likely to run into. This is a strength of his films but it can also be seen as a weakness. I love the "cultural diversity" and the matter of fact way these character are treated and accepted, but, on the other hand, I wonder if Almodovar has an agenda...to introduce bizarre and unsafe sexual practices as ok.

What I did love about the film was the love. The protagonist, Manuella, wonderfully played by the beautiful Cecelia Roth, has a heart for everyone whose path she crosses, it seems. The father of her child, a macho brute, who "went to Paris and got tits" in her words, who managed to dominate her at the same time that he was "screwing everyone in sight," who gave the nun AIDS, certainly isn't a character to love, but Manuella manages to overcome her hatred of him to allow him to embrace the child he has fathered with the nun. This is pretty big stuff.

The plot does require a lot of suspension of belief. What holds it together and makes it a valuable film, is the resolute course of human compassion that runs through it. There is an enormous amount of abuse in many ways, abuse of drugs, abuse of sex, abuse of famiy members, and yet these folks manage to pull through their knots of incredible difficulties to care about one another. Well, the ones who survive, anyway.

It's a mind-bender of a film, and obviously not for everyone. But for those who are willing to observe life through a different lens (that of Almodovar) it's an interesting and rewarding trip.

All About My Mother Overview

A single mother in Madrid sees her only son die on his 17th birthday as he runs to seek an actress's autograph. She goes to Barcelona to find the lad's father, a transvestite named Lola who does not know he has a child. First she finds her friend, Agrado, also a transvestite; through him she meets Rosa, a young nun bound for El Salvador, and by happenstance becomes the personal assistant of Huma Rojo, the actress her son admired. She helps Huma manage Nina, the co-star and Huma's lover, and she becomes Rosa's caretaker during a dicey pregnancy. With echoes of Lorca, All About Eve, and A Streetcar Named Desire, the mothers (and fathers and actors) live out grief, love, and friendship.

Have you ever wondered if Santa Claus has family problems like everybody else? Apparently, according to this movie, he's gone tons of them, and they're all quite seriously hilarious. Relationship difficulties, business problems, family tensions -- they're all amusingly explored by a really wonderful cast. Jenny McCarthy is beyond perfect as Santa's daughter, a powerhouse of a workaholic who's been called back from her normal business world to save her Dad's business.

Of course, she will run into the gorgeous old boyfriend and sparks will fly as the plot thickens. I love this movie any time of year. The laughs are there from beginning to end, and it's definitely worth watching multiple times with family and friends of any age.

Have I mentioned that Jenny McCarthy is fabulous?

Santa Baby Overview

Jenny McCarthy and George Wendt star in this heartwarming comedy about Santa Claus' daughter. When Santa Claus (George Wendt) gets too sick to run the toy shop, his workaholic daughter Mary (Jenny McCarthy) leaves behind her high-powered job in the city and heads north. Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

I finally got around to watching the DVD of NINE today. I had planned on seeing it in the theatre but the reviews were lukewarm at best so I held back. Sorry I did frankly. This was by no means the turkey it was portrayed to be, with performances and production design that made it really pop.
Someone here on Amazon commented that those of us who love musicals should support works like this. I agree. Whatever flaws there are in this film are the flaws I found in the orignal material when I first saw it back in the day. And Judi Dench in a boa singing about the good ol days at the Follies Berger is worth the price of admission.

Nine Overview

A vibrant and provocative musical filled with love, lust, passion and glamour. A world famous film director reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing numerous women in his life. With its incredible all-star cast, amazing performances, and stunning visuals, this razzle-dazzle extravaganza will make you long to BE ITALIAN.

#1 Cheap Lipstick Jungle - Season One Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Definite guilty pleasure...when I heard about this show and its competitor, CASHMERE MAFIA, I did the sighing & eye-rolling as both shows were being touted as replacements for SEX & THE CITY addicts. While I gave CM a chance, I did not begin watching LJ until the 4th episode mainly because of my dislike of three of the lead actors: Kim Raver, Andrew McCarthy & Lindsay Price but I happened to turn to the show one night and became hooked on the lives & friendship of Wendy (Brooke Shields), Nico (Raver) & Victory (Price).

As I watched this strike shortened 7-episode season, truly the only characters I didn't find entertaining or believable were Victory & Joe (the always wooden McCarthy). The actors have no chemistry so their romance was the least interesting storyline to me but the other actors' storylines & performances were so strong that I could overlook this one disappointment. Kim Raver, on the other hand was a revelation to me. I have never liked her as an actress but I really grew to care about "Nico" and loved her performance on this show - she was completely believable as the gutsy, tough editor of a magazine whose failing marriage sends her into the arms of a younger man.

On a superficial level, I loved the clothing, the chemistry between the lead actresses and the fast-paced nature of their lives captured the energy of the city much like SATC did. This is another show that I think would've been given more of a chance to survive if it'd been on a cable instead of a network channel which is a shame.

My biggest gripe with this set is the cost especially since this show is now cancelled. In order to make the purchase more palatable, the powers that be certainly could've added more behind the scenes interviews, extras regarding the wardrobe and bloopers but there's only a brief gag reel. Until the price point drops I can't honestly recommend purchasing this set but would highly recommend renting it.

Lipstick Jungle - Season One Overview

Based on the best-selling novel by Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City, Lipstick Jungle is the sassy, sexy and inspirational new series about three high-powered women who support each other through the triumphs and tears of big-city life. In every funny and fabulous Season One episode, follow the ups and downs of Wendy (Brooke Shields, Suddenly Susan), a sophisticated movie exec trying to manage a career and a family; Victory (Lindsay Price, 90210), a free-spirited designer dreaming of romance and making it big; and Nico (Kim Raver, 24), an independent and ambitious fashion magazine editor. Armed with strength, style and a wicked sense of humor, these women show that it takes a lot to make it in the Big Apple...especially good friends!

#1 Cheap The Sissi Collection Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Romy Scneider never looked more beautiful than in the role of the gorgeous Empress Elizabeth of Austria.
The movie is the first in a series of three movies recounting the tragic, fascinating life of this beautiful empress that eclipsed all others in Romantic allure. The first time we see Sissi in this film she is riding her horse at the family castle in Bavaria and her father encourages her to jump over the hedge of roses, while her mother disapproves. She is shown as a high spirited, beautiful and romantic young girl in the film which concentrates only on her visit to Bad Ischl where she accompanied her sister Helene with the prospect of her inminent engagement to the young emperor of Austria, Francis Joseph, but he falls in love with Sissi instead. She literally catches him with her fishing rod as the hook entangles in his uniform when he is passing in an open carriage. This scene may seem like a scene form a Vienese operetta, and the silliness of the guards and the secret service in particular, almost give the movie the flavor of an operetta. Karlheinz Böhm is very convincing as the young emperor and Vilma Degischer is appropriately bitter and snobish as the dowager empress, Archduchess Sophie, who is also Franz Josef's mother. Sissi's parents are excellently played by Magda Schneider as her mother, Duchess Ludovika and Gustav Knuth as the boisterous Duke Max of Bavaria. Uta Franz looks beautiful as her sister, Princess Helene (Nene) but she has the charm of a wooden beam, and one is not surprised that the young emperor treated her with the same interest as if she were a Meissen vase and went instead for the fiery, lively Sissi. In the film later on Nene comes back to Bavaria happily accompanied by a Prince Thurn und Taxis that looks obviously gay, and which one would think is the same Prince Thurn und Taxis that was King Ludwig of Bavaria's first lover, but it is a different one, he married Nene and they actually had a very happy life together.
The court dresses and jewelry are wonderfully detailed in this movie and Sissi actually wears an outfit very similar to one that was recorded in paintings of the empress. This movie will leave you with the sensation of having eaten a chocolate tart with a glass of champagne, without the worries of calorie intake, a true entertaining joy.

The Sissi Collection Overview

At the age of seventeen, Romy Schneider became an international star through her portrayal of Princess Elisabeth (Sissi) of Austria in the first of three lavish films directed by Ernst Marischka. While she would go on to work with some of the most influential and daring European directors of the era, Schneider will always be remembered by this defining role. Now for the first time on DVD, KOCH LORBER Films proudly presents the restored "Sissi Trilogy" (Sissi, Sissi: The Young Empress, Sissi: The Fateful Years of an Empress) in its entirety along with the U.S. theatrically released, English-language dubbed version, Forever My Love, and Victoria in Dover (The Story of Vickie), a precursor to the trilogy in which Schneider plays Britain’s Princess Victoria.

#1 Cheap Babe (Full Screen Special Edition) Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Based on Dick King-Smith's book The Sheep-Pig (New Windmills), a.k.a. Babe: The Gallant Pig (Next Steps Advanced Set 1), this is the story of a little pig who finds his place in life--and not as bacon. Babe (voiced by Christine Cavanaugh) is the runt of his litter, which may be what saves him from slaughter: he's donated to a country fair as the subject and prize of a guess-its-weight contest and won by Arthur Hoggett (James Cromwell), a laconic fellow who slowly comes to feel that the little porker may be more than he seems. Lonely for his litter-sibs, Babe is taken in by Fly (Miriam Margoyles), the farm's sheepdog bitch (rather against the better judgment of her drill-sergeant mate Rex (Hugo Weaving)), and raised as one of her pups. It's Fly who explains the business of sheepherding to Babe, but it's Babe who makes friends with the old ewe Maa (Miriam Flynn)--dogs think sheep are too stupid to relate to as equals--and raises the alarm when a pair of sheep-rustlers and their dogs attempt to make off with Hoggett's flock. He even saves the sheep from a trio of wild dogs. Meanwhile he's begun to display a herding gift of his own, separating chickens in the farmyard by color, which is what first makes Hoggett wonder if a pig could be trained as a herder. But when he learns the usual fate of pigs, it takes Hoggett, Rex, and Fly to save him before he can die of despair. Then, entered into the sheepdog trials, he finds that the sheep he's supposed to herd refuse to talk to him. How can he win the trial for Farmer Hoggett if he can't persuade them to move?

The animatronic work in this movie is delightful, and the animals come across as definite individuals--even some of the sheep (and the dogs are right--domestic sheep are pretty brainless). There's even a trio of mice who sing in falsetto! I'm not sure where in the British Commonwealth the story is set (it was filmed in New Zealand), but even American viewers shouldn't have any trouble getting involved in it and understanding what's going on. A great family film about family, faith, and the importance of following your star.

It's about a boy who dies trying to save the girl he has a crush on, then comes back from the dead to take her to the prom. In this one he's a zombie, not a ghost, so it's sort of a forerunner to Shaun of the Dead, though the protagonist is the only zombie. There's plenty of hilarious stuff, but it's pretty gross. Last Monday, September 15, 2008, The Home Theater Forum had Warner Brothers home video (T.V. and Animation Divisions only) on their chat line. Questions about a release for the 2nd season of Drew Carey Show were asked and Warner Brothers flatly said "no plans". I think this is a disgrace!!! Drew Carey is one of the best Comedy shows of the 90's!! We need to write to Warner Brothers and bombard them with emails and letters to get this show on DVD!!! Fans of the series Knots Landing did just that, and now Knots Landing (according to last mondays chat) Warner Brothers is giving that show another chance on DVD! We need to do the same for this show if you want more seasons of this show released on DVD!!! GET YOUR VOICES HEARD!!! The good news is Warner Brothers is planning to release another DVD set of Drew's other show: Whose Line Is It Anyway? Season 2. #1 Cheap Buster Keaton 2-DVD Pack Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Charlie Chaplin and the impassive Buster Keaton, side by side, and apologies to his fans but, for me, Harold Lloyd is not even in this picture. And while the Little Tramp resonates on a more sublime emotional level, it's the Great Stone Face who leaves your jaw dropped to the floor at the the sheer daring and inventiveness of his stunts. Both are geniuses of their form and both marvelous with the sight gags. But when it comes to stunts, there's no trumping Keaton in audacity and thrills and scale. Douglas Fairbanks was the action hero of the silent film era, but Buster Keaton wasn't that far behind. And Keaton made you laugh even as he flabbergasted you.

This 2-DVD set is produced by some never-heard-of company called Echo Bridge Home Entertainment and it's indicated at the start that "The contents of this DVD have been digitally re-mastered from masters that are many decades old." So some allowance must be made for quality of what's onscreen. I'm not a connoisseur of digital remastering so I'll just leave it with that I had no problem with it. But I'm easy to please. Others may wail at the gods over the grainy, sometimes washed-out look of the thing. What's here are THE GENERAL, STEAMBOAT BILL, JR., and COLLEGE, as well as the much lesser feature THE MISADVENTURES OF BUSTER KEATON.

Greatness sometimes requires time to be recognized. THE GENERAL was crapdoodled on when it was first released theatrically. People just didn't know what to do with the genre bending. Was it comedy? Or an action adventure? A historical drama? It took decades before THE GENERAL was recognized as, hands down, Keaton's best and most epic masterpiece, and its central character embodies the scrappy, little guy that could. If you want to glimpse precision and grace and audacity as manifested in one unassuming frame, these were never more on display than in this hilarious Civil War romantic chase thriller. THE GENERAL is the Great Stone Face's best foot forward.

Circa 1861 and there were two loves in Johnnie Gray's life: his locomotive, the General, and the lovely Annabelle. When war breaks out between the Blue and the Gray, Johnnie enlists but is summarily rejected, his engineering skills regarded as too invaluable for the Southern cause (not that Johnnie was told this). A year passes. Disgraced and spurned by his sweetheart, Johnnie at last gets a shot at redemption when Annabelle falls in the hands of Union spies and is spirited away on the hijacked General. Johnnie engages in wild pursuit deep into enemy territory.

Based on the Great Locomotive Chase from 1862, THE GENERAL is a non-stop thrill ride and the comedy spins out of the situations in which Johnnie finds himself. Artistry, great energy, and sheer guts drive this film. The thrills are genuine; the gags are ingenious, one of the most memorable being Keaton perched on the train's cowcatcher and using a railroad tie to dislodge another tie that was on the rail blocking the path. The timing on that stunt must have been ridiculous. And then there's the sensational staging of the bridge collapse near the end, and keep in mind that this set piece was neither CG-rendered or done on a scale model. THE GENERAL is a very funny movie, but of all the gags, the one that makes me laugh most is when, running short on fuel for the engine furnace, Annabelle throws away a log just because it had a hole in it. Keaton's reaction is priceless. And there's too the terrific evocation of time and place. The Civil War period is brought to life convincingly, the costumes and the sets and the look of the people in that era. Simply a great, great movie.

In 1928's marvelous STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. Keaton plays Boston college grad William Canfield, Jr. who after an extended absence visits his father in Muddy Waters. William Canfield, Sr., a.k.a. Steamboat Bill, a no-nonsense giant of a man and owner of the ramshackle steamboat, the Stonewall Jackson, hasn't seen his boy since he was a babe. When he at last sets his eyes on the slight, dandily-dressed young man, he... isn't impressed. But blood is blood and he roughly takes him in.

There's a whiff of Romeo & Juliet in this picture. Canfield Sr. has a bitter feud running with smug rival steamboat owner, J.J. King. What are the odds that Bill Jr. and King's lovely daughter would know each other from college and would spark up a romance? (Odds are good.) Canfield, Sr. forbids his son to see the girl. King forbids his daughter to see Bill Jr. And the mean, mean storm is coming, just the platform needed to showcase Bill Jr.'s derring-do.

STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. succeeds in part on the strength of its underdog story, that of the incompetent son proving himself to his father. Marion Byron is easy on the eyes as the love interest. Plenty of silent slapstick, but this movie is most famous for maybe the most amazing, most dangerous stunt Keaton had ever pulled. The howling storm (we assume it's howling, it's certainly very blustery) causes an entire side of a house to collapse on him as he just stands there, with only Keaton's exquisite placement and an open window to give him that teeny margin for error.

COLLEGE came out in 1927 and is enjoyable but thin in plot development. In this one, a bookish student named Ronald looks down on athletics in favor of academia, and he states as much in his high school valedictorian speech. The fun-loving student body is, of course, outraged. The girl of his dreams, Mary Haines, chastises Ronald for his stuffy words: "Anyone prefers an athlete to a weak kneed, teacher's pet." And off Mary goes to the prestigious Clayton College. The smitten but penniless Ronald follows her and is forced to work his way thru college. But can he, champion nerd of the silent film era, successfully court Mary, who again has become the most popular girl on campus? Especially since his chief rival, star athlete Jeff Brown, is also staking his claim? Ronald may have no recourse but to engage in dreaded athletics. Except that since this nerd is being played by the sinewy and incredibly coordinated Buster Keaton, well, he eventually gets somewhere....

But it can't be made too easy. Ronald proceeds to suck at baseball and to demonstrate his ineptness at track & field. But he finally gets to flex his muscles when he's made coxswain of the rowing team. To prove that sometimes it's a thing of not mind but heart over matter, Ronald learns that his sweetheart is in jeopardy from star athlete Jeff Brown - who it turns out is a mothereffing swain - and as he speeds to her rescue Ronald is suddenly able to master all the sporting skills in which he'd been previously found wanting. COLLEGE is fun, but not one of Keaton's best. There's also a sequence which some folks may find offensive, as Keaton puts on blackface when working as a waiter.

A pox on his talkies which are so markedly inferior to his silent works. In 1950 the British Lion film company fashioned THE MISADVENTURES OF BUSTER KEATON out of material lifted from Keaton's self-cancelled national television series LIFE WITH BUSTER. Keaton, by this time, was getting on in age, but he was still able to resurrect some of his mojo. But, honestly, I've just never gotten used to an audible Buster Keaton. The man, like certain unruly children, should be seen and not heard.

In THE MISADVENTURES OF BUSTER KEATON Keaton calls back a lot of dusty vaudeville routines and, sadly, some of them are plenty tired. In the series Keaton plays a humble entrepreneur, juggling time spent in his sporting goods store and in his little theatre company. Two of the first three skits fall flat for me, the golf bit and the poster pasting bit. But there are some hilarious gags here, and the funniest moments come during the stage plays, especially when Keaton wrecks a Shakespearean act while being chased by a jealous husband and, oh by the way, reenacts his famous stunt from STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. Certainly worth one look, but it's a far cry from his best stuff.

Luckily, this DVD set doesn't boast superiority over other collections. Who would it have been foolin' anyway? I recommend this collection on the strength of the quite manageable asking price. But if you're a straight up avid collector, then you'd do best to get your mitts on The Art of Buster Keaton (The General / Sherlock, Jr. / Our Hospitality / The Navigator / Steamboat Bill Jr. / College / Three Ages / Battling Butler / Go West / The Saphead / Seven Chances / 21 Short Films), although that sucker will certainly set you back in the piggy bank. But it's worth it. That one's got some more of my all-time favorite Buster Keaton flicks: the fabulous SEVEN CHANCES, THE NAVIGATOR, OUR HOSPITALITY, and SHERLOCK, JR.

Johnny Gray (Keaton) has two loves: his girl, Annabelle Lee, and his train, "The General." When "The General" is taken hostage with Annabelle on board, it's Johnny who must act quickly. "An undisputed classic" (BBC), The General returns to the roots of filmmaking, and proves Buster Keaton a timeless, iconic film star.

NO EXTRAS???? WTF! - Donald A. Prentiss - minneapolis, mn United States
Troll 2 has deleted scenes that have still been unreleased to this point and I thought this Blu Ray would have them - I was wrong and that upsets me. I love this so bad it's good movie but this just means I'm gonna have to triple dip on a DVD when they release a disc with some extras on it and that irritates me to no end. I only recommend this if you don't have it already (Troll 2) otherwise WAIT for a release with commentary, extras, deleted stuff and behind the scenes if won ever comes. I'd rate this higher if I wasn't so P.O.ed about the lack of anything on this Blu-ray.

I'm biased. I absolutely love this movie.

I think most people discount it on superficial means. It's a 90's "romantic comedy" starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan - how good could it possibly be? It didn't do well in the box office, and almost no one you know will counter this base assertion. They're wrong.

JVTV is like seeing Jesus on the street and ignoring him because he's ordinary and gross. It doesn't try to grab your attention with conventional, recognized forms of chest-thumping. Honestly, when viewed in the typical manner of "what is impressive, what will my friends think" manner of review, it's a failure. I get that.

To those who view this movie with a open heart and mind, though, it's a gem. It recognizes that we all face the same fears and frailties, and that those concepts are fundamental to everyone from a nobody to a celebrity. Movies like "American Beauty" or "Forrest Gump" get the attention for making us think about the fundamentals, but they're at best narcissistic emulations of the pure, obvious intent of this film. They play the violin, but it's not an original score.

Joe is an everyman, defined by the majority around him, which makes sense. What else do we derive value from than the input of our peers? This is, for the most part, how we all operate. It takes an earthquake below this level (a fatal disease, in this case) to redefine our view, which is the point of the film. What do we want? Why do we want it? Without a jolt in this direction, it's easy and harmonious to focus on the expected. It's harder to define ourselves.

Whenever I'm feeling lost and muddled, this is the movie I turn to. I don't care if this impresses anyone, and neither does this film. Neither should you.

The Volcano Should Have Won - in the first reel. - Bruce Barker - NC
I really wanted to like this film.
I saw it in theaters when it was first released and absolutely hated it. Over the years however, I've grown to respect Tom Hanks as an actor in even his most insipid early films. He is one of the rare actors that is able to elevate the script to higher levels with his rather vast collection of skills. It is the rare Hanks film that I'm unable to truly enjoy.

I've also enjoyed most of Meg Ryan's work and feel she's been underutilized and pigeon-holed into romantic comedy roles. If you think I'm crazy in this assessment, I suggest you watch her marvelous performance in "When a Man Loves a Woman" if you would like to get a glimpse into the surprising depth she has as an actress.

In addition, the movie has a huge number of cameo and near-cameo appearances by some of the truly great character actors of the time. Ossie Davis, Abe Vigoda, and even a young Nathan Lane, each leave their fingerprints on the finished product. In fact, in many cases the supporting roles outshine the performances of the lead actors.

However, Meg Ryan stinks up this movie in each of her three roles. Her accent comes and goes with annoying frequency and the only thing that makes it possible to see them as remotely separate characters is the variety of hair colors. Each has the same mannerisms, facial expressions, and moral outlook. In fact, each is ready to be sexually intimate with Hanks even though only one of them has known him for more than a day. Even then, her first character - a coworker of Hanks - is ready to sleep with him on the first date until she learns of his "fatal" illness. I understand the symbolism represented - all three represent Hanks' true love so he sees them the same, etc. - but Ryan could have added so much to the film by simply maintaining the characters as individuals instead of falling in and out of each character throughout the film.

The direction and cinematography are ham-handed. The beginning of the film is supposed to be dark and brooding. If the rain, puddles, ponderous soundtrack remake of Tennessee Ernie Ford's "16 Tons, and the grey monolithic building aren't enough to set that mood for you, don't worry. Almost everyone is dressed in grey and black and looking down at the ground as if the weight of the world were on his or her shoulders.

Almost every frame of the film is similarly drenched in one symbolic image or another. Nothing is subtle. Perhaps at the time of release this was considered innovative filmmaking, but a viewing of any one of the Cohen Brothers' films will show how this can be done properly without slapping the viewer in the face with constant lightning bolt images and the other 3 million contrivances the director inserts into this "lighthearted fable."

There is a moment, roughly 2/3 of the way into the film, where Hanks watches the moon rise over the ocean. He is stricken with awe at the beauty of it and it's almost impossible for the viewer to fail to share the emotion. The director's love affair with the image of the moon carries over into some of his other work (most notably in "Moonstruck") and the shot is absolutely gorgeous. It is the sole reason the film earned the two star rating from me.

Most reviewers adore this film and hail it as a cult classic of its time, but even a second chance viewing (this time with my wife - who incidentally disliked the film even more than I) did nothing but convince me that my boredom when I saw it in the theaters many years ago was justified.

Review from [..]

Helen, a smart and beautiful young woman living in London, has just been fired from her job because of gender discrimination. Tired and dejected, she hurries to catch the train back to her house. And that is where her life diverges.

One Helen (call her Helen A) does catch the train... and also arrives home in time to catch her boyfriend in bed with another woman. Dumping him on the spot, she moves in with her best friend, gets an awesome new haircut, and meets a funny, witty man named James. As the two begin to fall in love, James convinces her to set up her own PR company, and Helen A's personal and business lives flourish.

The other Helen (call her Helen B) doesn't catch the train. By the time she gets home, Lydia, the woman her boyfriend was with, is long gone. Helen B continues her relationship with him, but begins to suspect his infidelity. She is also forced to take a job as a waitress. Underpaid and overworked, Helen B is not happy.

Sliding Doors tells the story of how one small moment can set the rest of your life in two completely different directions.

I couldn't take my eyes off this movie, mostly because I was fascinated by the plot line. I've always wondered about the way small details can influence your life, so I was thrilled when I found out there was a movie about this. Sliding Doors would also make a great novel!

Weeds: Season Three Overview

America's favorite pot-dealing soccer mom is more addictive than ever in the third season of WEEDS, the highly acclaimed Showtime(r) Original Series. Emmy (r) and Golden Globe(r) winner MARY-LOUISE PARKER stars as Nancy Botwin, a single mom who resorts to dealing pot after her husband dies suddenly. But when an off beat way to make ends meet grows into a mini-empire, the mother of all dealers finds she may be in over her head - and on the verge of taking everyone else with her. Hilarious and subversive, WEEDS is the hit that put the herb in suburb.

Would give this show 4 stars if... - C. Killough - Truckin' USA
the liberal writers would leave their Bush and Christianity jabs out and stop pushing Prius! A big-bad-heroin-dealer buys seven for his "employees"?! Come ON!! Also getting too unbelievable that Nancy cares more about being green than she does about bringing her kids into the business. The pilot had the republican jabs but it was interesting enough to want to watch the next episode and so on and so on... but it's getting ridiculous! Don't know if I can put up with the liberal BS through the 5th season I've already bought...

#1 Cheap Ernest Saves Christmas Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

ERNEST SAVES CHRISTMAS

I have always loved Jim Varney and especially have always loved his Ernest character of course. Some of the Ernest films have been not so classic but still great while others have been pure classics. This one may not be the best of the classics but it is still one of the classics, mainly because of the heart of the film. Of course it could very well be the best one in the series depending on your taste. This film is really fun but is also one of the better films in the series. The film did very well at the box office debuting at number 2 and over all made something like 28 or 29 million. I believe it was his most successful but I am not sure, I should look that up.

The story is all about Santa Claus getting a bit too old and needed to pass off the duties to a new guy. He has to find the right man for the job and convince him that he is not joking. Of course this would not be a comedy without mishaps and that is what we get, from the start to finish. Santa just can't catch a break in this film losing his bag, his reindeer are stuck at the airport, he runs into a girl who is not to nice, and of course Ernest. Of course Ernest is the nicest guy he has ever come across but bad things seem to happen to him. Add in that the man he wants to be Santa does not really believe him and his sleazy agent may have a huge part for him in a movie. The movie would of course put his morels on the line and that does not sit well with Santa.

So after all that is thrown together so too is Santa and Ernest who must find a way to get the new guy believing by midnight so he can take over the job. If they can do it Christmas lives on but if they fail the holiday is lost forever. Of course we want it to go on so we root for the crazy guy who can do it all in Ernest to pull off a Christmas miracle. Add in two well known guys that are in other Ernest classics, some elves, and a variety of characters Varney plays himself and you have this classic. From the classic opening to the heartfelt moments throughout this film has something for everybody.

Jim Varney is flawless as always in the role of Ernest the care free, good natured and good hearted guy who is always putting others before himself. No one else could ever play this character though some have tried from what I have heard. Also his various other characters that come to life in this film are hilarious from snake guy and on, I love them all. Douglas Seale who plays Santa in this could actually be considered the lead because he has just as much screen time and the film is centered around him does a great job. He is one of the most believable Santa's I have seen on film yet. Oliver Clark is the actor portraying the actor that is to be the next Santa is great in the good guy being lead astray role. The man doing that is his agent played by Robert Lesser who is very funny in the role.

Noelle Parker is great in this film as the girl who needs to find her way back into a more honorable life and make her way home. Gailard Sartain and Bill Byrge are absolutely hilarious and chuck and Bobby and are just as popular in the Ernest films as Ernest himself. These two really needed to be in all of the films but sadly they were not, still I love the ones they were in. Director John R. Cherry III did an excellent job on this film as he did with all of the Ernest films. I really wish he would get hired to do more films because he knew how to make these films work. Writers Ed Turner and B. Kline did a wonderful job penning this because it truly is not only an Ernest classic but a holiday classic as well.

This has got to be one of the best comedies that the whole family can watch especially during the holidays. Ernest films were always full of fun and full of heart and featured wonderful performances from all involved. To be honest this could be the best overall Ernest film out there although Ernest Goes to Camp, Goes to Jail, and Scared Stupid are all classics for sure. Still I can't pick a favorite even amongst ones I didn't name. I recommend this film highly because the film has heart and is very fun, and right now that is the type of film I need.

Ernest Saves Christmas Overview

High-flying reindeer! Mischievous elves! Warp-speed sleigh rides! Get set for a magical dose of holiday cheer, zany season's greetings, and spell-binding special effects in this fast-paced, heartwarming comedy hit! When Santa Claus decides to retire and pass on his magic bag of Christmas surprises to a new St. Nick, he enlists the aid of a hilarious assortment of characters, including that lovable know-it-all Ernest P. Worrell (Emmy Award-winning comedian Jim Varney)! Along the way, Santa and Ernest help a cynical teen experience the season's spirit like never before. And that's where the fun -- and magic -- begin! ERNEST SAVES CHRISTMAS ... one delightful, surprising tale you'll never forget!

Genius - Shane Perry -
Jim Varney is a GENIUS! Ernest Goes to Camp and Ernest Saves Christmas are GREAT! Ernest Scared Stupid was decent too but when he went to Jail, that was HORRID! This is just a classic Jim Varney flick though, it is clean and hte ENTIRE family can enjoy this Holiday Classic!

#1 Cheap Y Tu Mama Tambien Reviews

Special Price Today Go To Store!! (Limited Time Offer)

Y tu Mama Tambien is alot of things: Sexy, Poignant, funny, sad, vibrant, honest, life-affirming, and in my opinion it is one of the best films of the 2000's. I remember I saw this film on the IFC channel a few years back when I was 16, and I was completly shocked by it. I remember having very mixed feelings about it, and associated it to soft core porn. After revisiting Y tu Mama Tambien again, I can say that my comment was idiotic. But in my own defense it is understandable for people to have these thoughts when only childish views of sex are allowed in this country, while any sort of honesty towards the subject is met with scrutiny and the NC-17 stamp by the MPAA (Or The league of Old Homophobic conservatives). In my honest opinion, their so called "protect our children's minds against sexuality but not violence" ideologies has done way more harm then good.

Now that I've matured a tad, I have to say the film has become one of my favorites. It is a beautiful journey that this film takes us through and everytime it ends I just want to start it over again. The Acting is exceptional from all of the leads, and there are so many layers to this film that you could view it countless times before finding them all. But when it comes down to it, the film is about life. How it can be sweet, vibrant, but also sad and bitter. But it's always worth living through. I think it's a shame that films like this can't be made here, while we have idiotic trash clogging up the cinemas. It just doesn't make sense to me.

But one summer, the boys learn more about life than they bargain for when they set off on a wild, cross-country road trip with seductive, 28-year-old Luisa. Too much sex becomes oppressive - Doreen Appleton - Scottsdale, Arizona
Too much sex. After a while it gets on your nerves.

The blatant rip-off of Jules et Jim, though, in the form of the voice-over narrator, is very interesting. Unlike the narrator in Jules et Jim, who simply states what is going on, this narrator is completely omniscient. He tells us things about the characters that they don't know about each other, for instance that Tenoch always lifts the toilet seat with his foot at Julio's house, and Julio will never know this.

As their car passes a cross beside the road, the narrator says "If they had passed this spot fifteen years ago, they would have seen a few chickens. If they had passed it five years ago, they would have seen an overturned truck, many bloody chickens, two dead bodies, and a women wailing inconsolably." This explains the cross by the side of the road.

After their last meeting for coffee in Mexico City, the narrator says, "They will never meet again." This is interesting.
