I watch this film over and over. It's one of those singularly remarkable movies like GoodFellas or perhaps From Dusk Till Dawn of which one rarely tires. I'm not at all hot on contemporary films in general but this one is truly a work of art.
THE STORY: A weasely Twin Cities new car salesman works for his noxious father-in-law who owns the dealership -- the salesman's wife is a modern-day witless shrew. When the salesman finds himself in serious financial difficulties resultant of his fraudulent pecuniary activities he hits upon a convoluted scheme of having two macabre small-time thugs to kidnap his wife, thus forcing his father-in-law to provide the million-dollar payoff, all of which is to be split among the three conspirators. But as one might suspect, these schemes do not always evolve as they are planned. A pregnant lady-cop investigates the matter and she's a real piece of work.
My older brother and I, (two retired cops who, these days, foster no redeeming motivations whatever to perform any particular deed which might somehow benefit mankind), often re-watch this film together. Big brother repeatedly comments to me during these lazy DVD afternoons that the wife's slaughter would be wholly justified based solely upon her inane manner of speech (the local vernacular), tenoned with her apparent void of an ostensible cerebral device... and I redundantly, wholly agree. In fact, everyone who gets snuffed throughout this hilarious video saga-noir pretty much has it coming as far as either of us are concerned. But, speaking for myself, I've become a really politically incorrect and tactless sort of individual who nowadays fosters little regard for the human species based upon its egregious planetary activities. So, I conveyed all this to simply point out that if you don't share my paradigm all that much you may not get as lathered up about this film as my brother and I have.
What is specifically so marvelous about this film?
CASTING: Perfect! Spot-on! I won't bother to recount notable specific performances and the appropriateness of the individual actors in regard to their roles because every single person in this film yielded a stellar performance and the casting director (John S. Lyons) has demonstrated a clear visionary gift.
LOCATIONS AND SETS: Perfect! If you've never been to either North Dakota or Minnesota in winter, then you'll get a well-articulated feel for that God-forsaken environment here. I very much doubt that the various, respective Chambers of Commerce and/or the Convention and Visitors' Bureaus much savor this film. In any case, the encapsulated ambiance of the region (openly acknowledging that any positive attributes of the district were probably omitted from the film) has been artfully captured here.
FILMSCORE: Perfect! The often mournful soundtrack abundantly supports and enhances the visual aspects of the movie to the Nth degree -- wonderful!
PACE: There are no dead spots (pun intended) in this film.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: Pure art! How does one film such a desolate place and convey it in such a robust and compelling technique? I haven't a clue but the camera and lighting people surely pulled it off wonderfully in this instance!
In summary, if you're the sort of individual who covertly (or openly) revels in the misfortune of others, OR, if you're a reasonably normal and insightful person who can understand that this is just a movie, (and if you can conveniently forget that it's all based upon actual events), then I have to believe that you'll connect with this movie in the same way as I have myself. I award this fine film my very highest recommendation.
(And, yes, I apologize to the residents of North Dakota and Minnesota for all my ostentatious and insensitive remarks and, in the same breath, I additionally urge you all to visit Florida in the Winter if you've never been there... :) ...and I want you folks to also know that I thoroughly acknowledge that my own home district of Appalachian southeastern Ohio is at least equally a lethal place to exist, only in distinctly different ways, and that I'm not picking on you specifically.)
