When South Park first aired on Comedy Central in 1997, no-one was ready for its unique and potentially offensive brand of humor. However, it quickly became one of the most popular and groundbreaking shows in television history, appealing to both teenagers and adults, even though it's really only appropriate for adults. Younger audiences enjoyed the crude humor (including countless fart jokes) and ridiculous plots, while adults and more mature teenagers had an appreciation for the show's important messages and social and political commentary. Indeed, South Park is not a dumb show. South Park is a show about four young boys and the small mountain town they live in. Eric Cartman is the fat one, Kyle is the Jewish one, Kenny is the poor one (who dies in literally every episode), and Stan is the 'normal' one. Together these four friends have many hilarious adventures, as described in the episode listing below.
Cartman Gets An Anal Probe: In the pilot episode, aliens visit South Park and abduct both Cartman and Kyle's little brother, Ike.
Weight Gain 4000: When Kathy Lee Gifford comes to town, Cartman starts to bulk up, while his teacher Mr. Garrison plans to kill her.
Volcano: An erupting volcano threatens to end the boys' hunting trip with Stan's uncle Jimbo while Cartman talks of the mysterious monster Scuzzlebutt.
Big Gay Al's Big Gay Boat Ride: The name of this episode speaks for itself. It's all about gay people and the prejudice they encounter.
An Elephant Makes Love To A Pig: With the help of Dr. Mephesto the geneticist, the boys attempt to crossbreed two different animals.
Death: Kyle's mom leads a protest against the crude and immature Terrance and Philip TV show.
Pinkeye: In the show's first Halloween episode, zombies invade South Park as the boys try to trick-or-treat.
Starvin' Marvin: Cartman accidentally switches places with a starving young Ethiopian boy.
Mr. Hankey, The Christmas Poo: The first Christmas episode deals with religious tolerance and introduces the show's most ridiculous character.
Damien: In an obvious spoof of The Omen, the son of the devil comes to town and brings about a boxing match between Jesus and Satan.
Tom's Rhinoplasty: The elementary school welcomes a substitute teacher when Mr. Garrison leaves to get plastic surgery on his face.
Mecha-Streisand: My personal favorite first-season episode has a plot too ridiculous to try to explain, but it does involve Barbara Streisand.
Cartman's Mom Is A Dirty Slut: The first season finale is a cliffhanger that leaves you wondering who Cartman's father is.
And there you have it. 13 episodes might not seem like much at first, but it adds up to over 5 hours. Besides, there are also introductions by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone before each episode, plus a special features menu on disc three which includes a number of interesting things. The first is "A South Park Thanksgiving", a short scene which was originally aired on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Next comes two music videos. The first is "O Holy Night", sung incorrectly by Cartman, and the second is "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" performed by Ned Gerblansky through his voice box. There is also a clip from the 1997 CableACE Awards, where the boys present an award. Some old reviews from 2002 complain about mixed up episode listings on the flaps of this boxed set, but my copy has apparently been corrected. This three-disc package is perfect as far as I'm concerned and therefore I highly recommend it.
